Questions on Phase I

Hi everyone! I am planning to start South Beach-ing this weekend, and was astounded by all the great info and tips here! Thanks!! I do have a few questions, though:

1. I don't really want to get the book...the gist I get is that I don't need it. Would it be good to have the food guide though?

2. What is the ultimate word on dairy in phase 1? I have seen a zillion sites that say (skim) milk ok and a zillion that say no. If so, how many times/day?

3. As to yogurt, no fruit yogurt of course, but what about vanilla yogurt? There is a Light and Fit creamy yogurt in vanilla that is divine, and I don't like plain yogurt.

4. Can I eat too many proteins in a day, or is any amount ok as long as I'm still hungry?

5. Wendy's chili-- ok??

Any input on those would be really appreciated. Thanks!!! :0) Keep going everybody!

Hi! and welcome aboard! You've got lots of questions, and answers may get buried in the fast-moving boards. There is a search option at the top of the page that you can use to search for specific topics like "chili" to pull up several buried (but not even old!) posts that may help. It beats waiting for answers that might already be there waiting for you!

As for the dairy, I don't think there is a final word yet. This difference between Dr. A's book 1 and book 2 just surfaced a few days ago. Personally, I'm not having it yet. I jumped back into P1 after the holidays and want to get the best results! I don't miss yogurt or skim milk, so I'm not as tempted as others might be. Just as Dr. A suggests introducing some of the healthier carbs gradually in P2, I would do the same with dairy and watch carefully to see if it slows my progress. If you keep losing, feeling great and see no problem, then I say go for it! The fact the milk does contain lactose remains, but how much it affects you can't be predicted.

Good luck, and try the search. You may find many great answers!

I just started the diet this past Sat. I have the book and it is good to have the list of food allowances/restrictions. It also has some pretty good recipes. During the first 2 weeks, it's no bread, pasta, fruit, juice, sugar of any kind (cookies, cake), no dairy (milk, yogurt). You can eat low-fat or fat-free cheese, real eggs, lean meats, fish, veggies (no potatoes, carrots, corn). We're basically eating quiche for breakfast (recipe in book), salads for lunch, and grilled meat or fish with veggies for dinner. It's not that bad after the first few days. I haven't even really been hungry. Oh and they emphasize mid-morning and afternoon snacks....string cheese, nuts (sm. amount), cottage cheese, turkey rolled with lettuce. I'm not sure about the protein amounts...I think as long as you stick to a normal size portion at each meal, you'll be ok. I'd be curious to know about the Wendy's chili as well :-) You could make your own, but just make sure the sauce you use doesn't have high fructose corn syrup.
