Anyone else with PCOS on SBD??
| Fri, 01-09-2004 - 8:39am |
Hi there...I am brand new to this board. I started SBD seven days ago. I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and have slowly put on weight over the past two years and am ready to take it off. I do not have much to lose .... 20 pounds....but none the less need to lose it.
No only do I wish to look better I am hoping to help my PCOS also. I would like to be able to get off the meds I take for it. My question is if there are any others out there with PCOS that are on SBD? Has it helped the symptoms and are you still on your medication for it?
Thanks so much!

Welcome to the board!
I have PCOS also. I followed Phase 1 and lost weight but think I gained it back from the holidays. I just started back on Phase 1 two days ago. Because of PCOS, there's hormonal issues that affect weight. I have had a battle all of my life. This is the first "eating plan" that has really helped me. Have you had a problem with being overweight since childhood? Many PCOS patients have. What type of meds are you on? I talked to my dr.'s and after much testing and discussion, and trying different hormones, we decided I would be better off with diet and lifestyle changes because the meds had too great a risk for me. I have trouble with superficial thrombophlebitis and the blood clot risk was too high. What is your situation?
Hi there!

I was diagnosed with PCOS 10 years ago...I had never heard of it...but had all the classic symptoms..gained 60 pounds in one year...very irregular periods...etc.
I have found in the past 10 years that if I keep my ideal weight the symptoms drastically reduce. Unfortunately the last few years it has not been that easy....for whatever reason.
I am currently taking metformin and spironalctine (sp?). While the medicine helps keep me regular and keeps some symptoms down I would like to lose the extra weight I have and see if I can get off my meds.
PCOS is also at risk for Diabetes...and I am already showing signs of being insulin resistant so I want to get that in check and be healthy.
I'm so glad to hear from others that have it and are doing SBD and have seen results.
Thanks so much!!

Your message, though, is so important. Female hormones and insulin are much more closely related than we ever thought. Ever wonder about that "middle age spread" that occurs at about the same time as perimenopause and menopause? I don't think it's a coincidence!
I thought it was interesting that you said you are already showing signs of insulin resistance. The truth is that your insulin resistance may have a lot to do with the cause of your PCOS.
Metformin is a medication that controls insulin responses to glucose. It's actually a drug for diabetics. Recent information (within the past 5-10 years) has shown it effective in regulating the menstrual cycles of those women with PCOS and insulin resistance.
You may be able to eventually stop the metformin once you have corrected the insulin resistance. Watching the carbs is a great way to do that. (Of course, talk with your physician before changing any medications.)
Meds have side effects. Good eating habits don't---not any bad ones anyway.
Good luck to you.
Hi Beautiful (hey that's what my dh calls me.
I wasn't really overweight, but I had a few extra pounds. So he put me on a low carb, NO sugar diet. I lost some weight...but unfourtunatlly it also became the beginning of an eating disorder (anorexia). I have come a long way from that..but it wasn't until an article I read on the december (2003) issue of MarieClaire that I first heard of the relation between pcos and insulin resistance!!!
I am eager to talk this over with my doctor back home (I'm not living in the states) but I would also like to take advantage of my being here (New Jersey, Princeton) to see if anyone can recomend a good doctor.
I am not having much luck with the diet, but it can be due to a number of reasons...so I'm still trying, thanks to the support I feel just writting to all of you.
Good luck!
I am looking for info on this at the SBD-online boards... many have PCOS and have found SBD helpful in losing weight and decreasing symptoms. Many of their dr's told them to try SBD.
Susan :)
Even though I have had this for 10 years...I learn something new about it everytime!
