Is this a good diet to lower cholesterol
| Fri, 01-09-2004 - 10:36am |
Hi everyone just found this board. I started the SBD this week, for myself I want to lose about 25lbs, but I was talking to my mom last night and my dad just found out he has really high cholesterol 307, so he obviously has to try and get it down some. Is this a diet that could do that, he doesn't need to lose weight. My mom has been interested in trying it to lose weight for herself and if it would work to lower cholesterol I might be able to convince them to give it a try.
TIA for any information. I'll check back later.

YES, YES and YES!
A person with a high cholsterol reading is going to want to follow this diet by concentrating on the low saturated fat and high mono-unsaturated part of the diet.
What a person with high blood cholesterol should do on this diet is use substitute eggs or egg whites only. Use only the leanest or lowest saturated fat meats and poultry only. And use only trans fat free margarine. I suggest using only olive oil when oil is needed for cooking or for salads. Adding olive oil may actually increase the good cholerterol in the blood.
They will also want to use only fat free cheeses. Cheese is high in saturated fat even when low fat.
Eat lots of low glycemic vegetables and beans that are allowed.
Eat some nuts everyday, but only in the recommended amounts. Nuts, and peanuts may also increase the good type of cholesterol.
Everything a person eats should provide some nutrition. The low fat ricotta dessert is better for a person than the Fudgecicles and sugar-free jello which do not profide health bennefits.
A person with high blood cholesterol is also going to want to avoid ALL trans fats. That is easier on this diet as most of the time they are also accompanied by sugar and white flour.
There is a lot more that I could say but YES, this is an excellent diet for someone with high blood cholestrol. Get them started on it immediately.
