Hi,

I have been hearing from people who have been on the SBD that you gain alot of what you lost back once you go on carbs again? Is this true? I am scared by this statement.

If you add the proper carbs into your diet you will not gain weight.

When I started this "diet" many people criticized the restriction of certain foods. The reality is that this needs to be a life change, not a temporary alteration of eating habits. With any diet, (whether it be a lowering of calories, restriction of foods, etc.)you'll gain weight back, if you go back to your previous eating habits. It's great because I'm making so many different meals now...

What Cathy said and then some!

The truth is that the HEALTHY carbs, found in fruit, whole grained breads, oatmeal, etc... will not pack on the pounds. If you go back to old ways, white pasta, white bread and refined sugars, yes the pounds will come back on. Also, when eating healthy carbs don't go overboard either. Two slices of whole grain bread at every meal may not be the best idea!

Some people notice that after the first two weeks, if they DO NOT add back healthy carbs, do NOT lose weight. So, it is equally important to get those healthy carbs back into your system. If you want start by adding a piece of fruit a day. And we sure could use the extra vitamins this time of year!

Then try adding some of the oatmeal to your diet. This is also LOADED with fiber. My dh has been on SBD since mid October and has lost about 27 pounds alternating between P2 and P3. He allows himself a special treat once a week and he's still managed to continue losing. He was full of bad eating habits pre SBD and now he has no desire to return to that woe. He wants to lose about 5 more.

I lost 10 and would like to lose another 5, but have not been as good as I would have liked to see myself due to several personal issues. Then again those last 5 are the hardest. In fact if I do not lose them I will still be happy and I will continue this woe in the future and yet I will allow myself special treats on occasion too.

Hope this helps!

I agree with all the ladies that have posted.

-Add in good carbs in moderation.

-This isn't a "quick fix" diet!

-Think of this as a lifestyle change.

-Kiss your old eating habits goodbye!

-Enjoy the wonderful foods we're allowed.

-It took awhile to put on the weight, it will take awhile to get it back off!

Good luck, and Take care!

I just started Phase 2 on Monday. I have Added back in certain fruits and 1 serving of whole grain bread or bran cereal per day. Already I've lost another pound and the diet is going great. I also wanted to say this: Before Bran cereal tasted so nasty to me and I craved the sugar filled cereals. Now I can eat bran cereal with nothing to top it and it tastes wonderful. I've cleaned my body of sugary foods and I am now enjoying the taste of healthy things. Don't give up, Adding carbs back in is part of the diet, and you will lose weight!

I agree with all of the previous posters and want to add...

If you do a no-carb diet (ie. *not* South Beach), then yes, you will automatically gain water weight once you introduce them back into your diet. But that is only a few pounds, and it is water, chemically necessary and stored along with glycogen, the form of carbohydrate that your body stores in your muscles and liver.

As far as regaining all of the weight back, that would be from not learning good eating habits, and not learning how your particular body reacts to certain foods.

In my opinion, following SB is both learning to eat properly and getting acquainted with your individual metabolism. And it is definitely not a no-carb diet, but rather, as someone here already said, a way of eating *healthy* carbs. (And healthy fats, too.)

Good luck!!

What is the restriction to certain foods you are talking about? I have been here since September, and I haven't restricted anything or any certain food groups.

In the first two weeks, you are limited to things, yes, but restricted thereafter, no.

Instead of white potato I have sweet.

Instead of enriched pasta I have whole wheat (but I don't really want it anymore)

Instead of White bread, I eat Whole grain bread.

Instead of eating carrots (which I really didn't like much anyhow), I have discovered greens, all kids of other beans, and different veggies!

I still eat my fruit though. Don't get me wrong. I wasn't thrilled with not having fruit for two weeks, but I got back on track after that. I don't drink fruit juices anymore.

It's all in how you add good carbs back. If you use SBD as a quick fix, yeah, you'll gain everything back and possibly then some if you go hog wild on the refined sugars again. If you are committed, you will do well. (You in general.)

This is my second time on South Beach. The first time was April of last year. I did gain back all the weight (ten pounds) that I lost from the first time. And, the reason for my weight gain was pure and simple glutiny!!! I knew I was putting junk in my body, but I did it anyway!! Over Christmas was especially bad.

If you want this to work, then you absolutely must change your eating habits and maintain that change. If you choose to overeat and eat the wrong things, then the weight will come back. That is why there is a Phase III plan. I just didn't bother to follow it. I know better this time! :o)

The good news....this is day 3 for me and I'm finding it much easier than last time, because I'm already into SB mode. I now know what I can and can't have and I'm not reaching for the garbage!!!

Good luck! I'm truly convinced that this is a "doable" way of eating for life!

Hi Shar,

Kudos to you for getting back in the game, and seeing where you went astray before. Wishing you lots of success. I agree that this is a very doable plan.

I hope you stick around. There is so much support here, and always lots of great info. Even when I'm too busy to post I read a lot of the posts. It helps keep me inspired.
