Hi,

I have been hearing from people who have been on the SBD that you gain alot of what you lost back once you go on carbs again? Is this true? I am scared by this statement.

Hi Jill,

This board wasn't here in April when I started out the first time. I did post on the Prevention board for awhile, but I always had trouble getting in. I'm also a long time groupy of the Fit Over 40 board!!! They are an incredible group of ladies and my backsliding on diet and exercise coincided with my attempt to reduce my computer time (i.e. staying off the boards). What I've discovered is that I really benefit from the support I've found on these boards!

I only made it halfway to my goal last time. This time....it's all the way!

Hi aspen, I think it might be that the people you've talked to fell off the program, started eating "whatever" again, and gained it back?

I didn't yet read all the messages so forgive me if I repeat.

No matter what diet you choose to use, if you go back to your "normal" pre-diet eating ways, you will gain weight back.

I'm coming up on 4 years of eating right this March. I have not been on the SBD all that time. I've been making my own diet using lots of recommendations. Like eat lots of fish, veggies, peanuts, olive oil etc. My homemade diet is almost identical to the SBD.

I've lost 90 pounds. But this winter when I got some discouraging news from the doctor I lost it and started eating junk. Low and behold 15 pounds came flying back on in two months. I don't blame my diet. I blame my lack of ability to maintain control under stress. But you see I'm back here rejuvinating my SBD muscles.

Remember, potatoes and tomatoes where not part of the diet for many years, not until Columbus discovered America. They are native to America. So obviously people can live without them. White flour, white bread and white rice are even new "inventions". Believe me you can live without them. The alternatives are so much more healthier for you, so laugh in the face of anyone that says you must eat junk made of white flour.

Just my two cents worth. Thanks for the great question.

Irene

P.S. After all this time, "Normal" for me is eating right. Eating sugar and white flour and white potatoes is "ABNORMAL" for me.

I've been on south beach since labor day. i've added back in all types of carbs...even, i hate to admit, some bad ones over the holidays and on vacation the early part of this year. and it's worked great and i havent gained any weight back at all. and i gotta tell you, by all rights, for what i ate, i should have!

my sister, however, tried south beach for one week. she lost 8 pounds. which, everyone will tell you, in the beginning is a lot of water. then she quit and went back to all of her old habits. and gained it right back.

i've always had a theory that the reason why some people stall in the early part of phase 2 on this woe is that when you first start adding back in good carbs, you're really substituing fat loss for water loss. so you're permanantly losing weight even if the scale doesnt show it. and many of us who lost inches rather than pounds in that phase could support that claim with our own experience.

so here's my takeaway...and it's glaringly obvious, but perhaps worth saying anyway. if you're looking for a quick fix, it doesnt exist. if you're gonna do this for a week and then quit, you'll gain it back. but if you're gonna do it for REAL, you'll REALLY lose weight. not water weight, but fat and inches. and you'll lose it permantly.

in fact, upon my return, i've reinstituted a new phase 1 stage. if my theory about how this works is right, i'm now holding on to alot of water that's hanging out with the bad carbs i ate (and drank) over the past 3 weeks. maybe i can kick start another round of weight loss?

best of luck,

Hope
