Support for men on SBD?
| Wed, 01-14-2004 - 10:18am |
Hi all!
I've been noticing that many of the women on this board are doing SBD together with their husbands. Do they only get support for their new lifestyle through their wives? Are there any boards like this for guys? Or are they just not the types to use message boards? Maybe a bunch of women can hook up their husbands with each other through email, a manly email buddy group. Some of these guys gotta use email!
Just a suggestion! My appologies if this is already being done. :) Or if it sounds completely outlandish to you ladies.

My DH is doing SB with me and is getting his support through me, but that's the way he wants it. In fact, in the beginning, he was driving me so nuts with some of his questions that I put my foot down and say I would not cook or shop for him anymore until he read the book. LOL. Once he did that, I was happy to take the lead again for him, since my role these days is homemaker (and FT student.) He commutes 150 miles round-trip every day, and can't cook anyway. :-)
What's amazing is that now that he has lost 43 pounds, men at his work are jumping on the SB bandwagon, and starting to ask *him* all kinds of questions. LOL. There's even one macho guy who used to bust DH's chops for eating salads "girlie food", but now he's doing the same thing. LOL.
I think it would be great if guys could get together and support each other, but they don't seem to want to. Men are very welcome here, though, if they can take all our talk of TOM, "the whoosh", "Boobasauruses", and all that. :-D

My bf was the EXACT same way.... asking me So many questions, I made him read the book before I said anything else. He is now 5 pounds from his high school weight (155), and everyone notices! He lost 23 pounds, and has kept most of it off. He isn't nearly as strict as I am, but he does his best.
I have always been his source of inspiration with the SBD, which is fine by me. He isn't big on message boards, they just don't appeal to him. Although he is an advocate for the SBD and has been desperately trying to get his mother to commit, she has over 100 pounds to lose.
I think a mens support group is a great idea! Getting healthy isn't just for women! Besides, there is nothing sexier then a healthy man.

Guys are really funny, and sad, with how they won't take care of themselves. When I met my DH, he was very overweight, never cooked for himself. His clothes and his refrigerator just screamed "I'm single", LOL. In his fridge?? Milk, Diet Pepsi, ketchup, cigarettes, and batteries for his pager. I'm not kidding when I say that was it!! In his freezer?? Frozen dinners. In his pantry?? Tea and cereal.
The boy needed some home cooking and new ties!! (OK, new underwear, too, but I didn't find that out right away!! :-o)

I am new to SBD (on my third day) and yes... I'm a guy. I am my own support group but I've been listening in to your conversations in order to get ideas, and smiles. I cracked up with you little conversaton about Beano... which, by the way is great stuff. Please know that I'll be here listening in the background. I've never joined a women's message board before so I guess I'm reaching for the feminine side of my self :0 My wife just had the WL surgery last month and has lost 30 lbs in the same number of days but I want to loose weight naturally and the SBD seems like a good one. I, like many of you "other women" have tried every diet... lost 80 lbs on low fat/low Cal diet but then quit loosing. Therefore... here I am! I'm looking for clues, I'm reading Dr. A's book now but haven't found any filler foods. I am doing exactly Phase one and feeling hungry. Is there anything you can eat to fill in... ie. eggs, etc. Please help! And continue talking about us guys farting like we aren't here. We love to laugh too.
Thanks,
David

Welcome to the Beach!!
I'm not sure what you mean by "filler" food. When you say you are doing phase I exactly, do you mean following the menu plan to a T?? You don't have to do that, though it can be helpful in the beginning as you're adjusting to the plan. Anyway, when I did phase I, I often ate more than three snacks per day. There were days when I had as many as six snacks (all phase I friendly), but I still lost 9 pounds after 14 days. When you're really hungry, you should eat. Just make sure it is from the phase I food list.
Lots of luck!!

What a cute/fun idea!
I'm thinking that there aren't alot of men because ivillage is mostly advertised as a woman's network/support place (I think.. isn't it?
