Not working...

I switched to SB from Atkins in October. I had gotten down to 117 from about 123, and only had about 5 lbs left to go. Well, as of this morning I'm UP 8 lbs to 125. I don't know what I'm doing wrong! I eat from the foods to enjoy list, avoid the foods to avoid, and still I'm NOT LOSING WEIGHT. I feel bloated all the time (despite drinking water and taking Metamucil.) I think I'm going to give this about 2 more weeks, and then go back to Atkins. I know it's not the healthiest diet, but at least I saw results!!! I just don't know what to do!!! :( Any suggestions????

I'm kind of phase one, but I have a few phase 2 items too: Oatmeal at breakfast occasionally (maybe once every other week), or an apple with natural peanut butter, or those WASA crackers with part-skim mozzeralla. I love to cook, so I'm always trying the new recipes on here. My typical menu is like this: Breakfast: 2 egg

omlet with 2% american cheese and green peppers, and 6 oz V8. Snack:

string cheese. Lunch: turkey burger (sometimes 9 grain whole wheat toast,

sometimes plain)with lf cheese and veggies (green beans or steamed

broccoli with velveeta light) Snack: celery with natural peanut butter. Dinner: grilled

chicken or salmon, more veggies or a salad. I'll sometimes have the

ricotta dessert, sometimes more celery and pb. I enjoy a glass or two

of red wine a couple times a week, could that be slowing me down? Maybe too much pb, or cheese??? (cheese is always part-skim mozzarella, or FF ricotta) I just don't know! I'm afraid to add more phase 2 foods, as I've already gained it all back and then some!

I also workout 3 or more times a week, as I work at a women's fitness center, and workout while I'm at work. I know it's not muscle gain, because it's flabby! I've also measured myself and I've gained inches, so I know it's not water weight too.

Hi Audrey,

If you had success on Atkins and not on SBD, then I would start by comparing your typical day's menu on Atkins before, to what you are eating now. Maybe you made the changes to the more starchy carbs too fast. Also, it could just be that you are a strong protein type and your body needs more protein compared to carbs to not only loose weight, but be healthy. There is a great book that can help you figure out what your metabolic type is and it is called The Metabolic Typing Diet. It's not a 'diet' but rather it lets you figure out based on a self-test what your metabolic type is and then lists the allowed foods and foods you should avoid. IT has helped me a great deal already and I am only half way through.

I would disagree that Atkins is not a healthy lifestyle. If you stay on induction for the rest of your life then yes, that's not realy healthy, but if you increase carbs until you find your maintenance level then there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Also, Atkins never said you should eat eggs, meat, and bacon, he said you CAN. A lot of people get hung up on this and claim that Atkins wants you to live on those high fat items only. Atkins himself ate leaner meats, veggies, low carb breads, and even fruit.

Thanks so much for your advice. I'm going to start cutting back on pb, and wine for awhile, and see if that helps. I'll also keep in mind about the turkey burgers, and check the label on that when I get home. It's hard to find time to cook (I work 3 jobs, so when I get home I just want something QUICK!) I just throw the burgers on my George Forman over my lunch hour, so that's why those are kind of a staple! But, if it's what's causing my weight loss stall, I'll adjust. Again, thank you for your help!

Just wanted to give a little update: I've been following the suggestions you made to me, and I'm back on track! Down 2 lbs since Monday, and feeling better already! I think the peanut butter may have been the problem, so I've started having LF cheese with my celery for snacks instead. Thanks so much - you guys are lifesavers!!!

I too have a devil of a time losing weight. But I found if I fixed the Quiche cups and have two for breakfast and two for lunch and then a regular dinner of lean meat and lots of veggies, I could finally lose weight. I had to hide the nuts and the peanut butter, olive oil, and anything high in calories. So I know what you are going through. You can eat only allowed foods and still gain weight. The problem is that there is a fine line between eating just right and eating too little and having the body think it is starving. But for me, nothing but really cutting back has worked.

However I've been dieting, scratch that, been eating right for almost four years now and I think I'm getting resistant to weight loss, the body has adjusted to eating low saturated fat and good carbs for a very long time now. Exercising every day of the week also does not prevent me from gaining if I eat wrong.

Irene

P.S. I still have some snack during the day, mostly low fat cheese sticks or an Apple.
