Ok, I am new to this.. Ussually I have been counting calories... but its been to hard to do that lately & I havent  been losing weight... I was thinking of doing the south beach diet but I am wondering.. Is there certain things that you cannot eat on phase 1? I absolutly love fruit so going without fruit for 2 weeks might be a little hard.. I have read up a little but would like some input. I have a hard time staying full because I am always hungry.. I eat alot reguardless so I need some help..

We have a thread under "Phase 1" called Getting Started, which includes everything you need to know about SBD and the eating guidelines.

Hi & welcome!

I agree, you might want to start in Phase 2.

Ok, I am confused. It almost appears to me you are sabotaging the South Beach and setting someone up for failure by suggesting to someone they skip Phase 1. I can understand the reason to suggest this to someone with Diabetes or some other compelling medical reason, but I do not agree if the person is reasonably healthy. Yes, I agree that one of the purposes of Phase One is to deal with the cravings, but from my understanding, the South Beach also uses Phase One to Jump Start someone's weight loss as mentioned in the bottom of Page 4 in Dr. Agatston's South Beach Diet Book.

Maybe I just am not as educated about this as some others here on the board, but I feel certainly reduces a person's chances of success, and slows the initial weight loss.

This is from the official South Beach Diet online site:

Anyone can skip Phase 1 of the diet anytime they want. If you have only a small amount of weight to lose, or if you’re more interested in improving your cholesterol than in dropping pounds, start in Phase 2 or 3 of the diet. Your weight loss may be slower, but you’ll still experience the benefits of improved heart health. Here are other reasons for skipping Phase 1:

-You don’t have cravings for sweets or starches.
-You’re nursing (be sure to check with your doctor).
-The diet is for a child, preteen, or teen (be sure to check with your pediatrician).
-You engage in endurance exercise (running or long distance cycling).
-Your doctor recommends that you not start in Phase 1.

I personally have had a lot of success on South Beach - I lost almost 70lbs and have maintained that loss for over 2 years now. I am not a fan of phase 1 and if I had known what I know now, I would NOT have done phase 1.

The book also explains that phase 1 is not really healthy eating. It is a very short term thing. Problem is - most people don't get this. They think "hey - if I lose fast in phase 1, then if I STAY in phase 1 forever, I will always lose fast!" So they punish themselves, restrict themselves, deprive themselves of HEALTHY and NECISSARY foods like fruits and grains for way longer than two weeks. Or it scares them of fruits and grains and sets them up with the mindset that they are the "enemy" of weight loss. Or they use phase 1 as a "punishment" - saying things like "oh, I slipped and had a few of my kids french fries so now I must force myself to be miserable for two weeks and go back to phase 1". I've seen these things over and over and over in my 3 years posting on this board. Also, people start getting disappointed and quit when they don't see the "big numbers" they say in phase 1.

Basically I feel phase 1 sets people up for a lot of psychological issues. So if someone just can't handle phase 1 and feels like "Oh, no way I could do phase 1, so I'll just forget about South Beach altogether" - then its MUCH MUCH better for them to start on phase 2 and get all the REAL benefits a healthy eating lifestyle. Phase 1 is not a lifestyle. Its only two weeks and such a small part of what South Beach is about. I've been on it for 3 years - exactly 14 days of that was phase 1. Only 1.28 percent of my South Beach experience involved phase 1. That is why a lot of us don't see it as "essential". Its sticking with things for the long term that really matters - not just the first two weeks.

Hi Jason,

I personally feel the same way about Phase 1, for the same reasons.

Thanks for your help.. I think starting in phase 2 might help me too. I just have the problem that I absolutly love fruit.. I am not much of a veggie person.. but I dont know if it limits my fruits then that might not work so much... I will check the thread though & if I have questions I will ask. thanks.
