Will SBD help my terrible cholesterol?

I just got my cholesterol taken today and I am really concerned. Granted I am 25 pounds overweight and have a terrible sweet tooth, but I didn't expect this. I am also only 35. Total cholesterol: 247, LDL: 198 and HDL: 17. I have to attack this aggressively or I need to go on statins. My numbers were borderline a year ago but now they are really bad. Will South Beach help lower my LDL but also raise my HDL? I guess what confuses me is what really lowers LDL. Is it low carb, low fat, or just weight loss regardless of what diet you pursue. Thanks for any advice!

I was on the South Beach in the middle of 2006 before I fell off the wagon. My Triglycerides were so high they were off the chart and the Doctor could not read them. After being on the South Beach for a very short time, my Triglycerides fell and my over all Cholesterol was at 130. The South Beach works.
