Non Meat eater success?
| Tue, 02-26-2008 - 9:06am |
So I am thinking about starting again, but I have recently sworn off meat and poultry, I still eat some fish but mostly meat substitutes. Has anyone out there had success with this diet as a non meat eater?
I really want to lose 20lbs and feel like this way of living is reasonable. I am ready, but need the support and any ideas that non meat eaters might have...
Thanks,
Christine

Hello!
Katy would definitely be the guru on combining SouthBeach and vegetarianism, but from my limited experience thus far, it has not been difficult at all. I don't know where you were getting your protein from before, but you did mention fish. I still eat fish for now, and I also derive my protein from beans, tofu, tempeh, etc. I had been at a stall as far as the scale goes, for about two months now, and after only a few days doing vegetarian it is moving in the right direction again (down!). So there is certainly success in SB and going veggie! Here is the link to starting out on South Beach as a vegetarian, hope that helps:

Hey Christine! I don't eat meat either, and I don't find it difficult at all to stay on south beach. I actually think south beach makes it easier to be a healthy vegetarian because you have to eat so many veggies and fruits (phase 2). I think as long as you stick to the recommended south beach servings, you'll be fine. Like Destiny, I really like proteins like
Welcome back!
Thanks Katy,
Well I have used all of the MS products in the past, and tofu.
Depending on where you live, you should be able to find tempeh and seitan at the grocery store. They both need to be refridgerated, so check the produce section. You may have to go to a health food store, like Whole Foods. Seitan is very "meaty" so you can use it in the place of meat. It's just wheat gluten, so you can make it yourself. This website has a recipe for it http://www.theppk.com/. Tempeh is harder to describe...it's got a tougher consistency because it's made from fermented soy beans.
I have a few cookbooks that I love, and I just try the recipes out of those. I also read a lot of vegan blogs for recipes and also to see what recipes they tried and did or didn't like. My favorite cookbooks are Veganomicon, Vegan with a Vengence, and Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan. The blog with the most recipes is http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/. I know that a lot of libraries have a good cookbook section, so if you didn't want to invest in one right now, you could just check one out.
With beans I really like making chili. I never use a recipe, I just dump a bunch of stuff into the crockpot, like 3-4 cans of beans (usually black and kidney), a jar of salsa, 1-2 cans of tomatoes, an onion, and a bag of frozen peppers. Then I season to taste. Anytime I make soup, I usually add beans to it. I also like chopping up tempeh into really small pieces and saute it with onions, pepper, bbq sauce, and black beans. Sometimes I add chopped peaches, and I think mango would be good too.
Thanks Katy,
I am heading to my grocery store now, so I will check out the produce section.
