Excerpt from an original interview with Dr. Agatston himself.

Member question: How long can you safely stay on the Phase 1 part of the diet?

Agatston: Phase 1 is to get rid of carbohydrate cravings. Once this is accomplished, it is fine to begin Phase 2. For those who are quite overweight, they often are doing very well on Phase 1, they are not hungry and do not want to leave it. The rapid weight loss in Phase 1 also gives a very positive feedback. The problem with staying on Phase 1 and losing too much weight too rapidly is that you lose muscle and bone mass, which is very metabolically active. If you lose muscle and bone mass, you will be burning fewer calories while you are sleeping. For this reason we recommend exercise, which helps to maintain muscle and bone mass and therefore a higher metabolism or higher metabolic rate. We recommend moving to Phase 2 at least by the third or fourth week. The more there is to lose, the longer it is okay to stay on Phase 1, but we still like to see movement to Phase 2 at least by the third or fourth week.

This part I am adding from the article just because it relates to diabetes.
Note: it does not say that Diabetics absolutely should start in Phase 2.

Moderator: Are there any special medical conditions that would preclude trying this diet?

Agatston: No, there are no special medical conditions, but if a dieter is on medications for high blood pressure, for diabetes, for heart failure, then adjustments of medication may be necessary as the diet is started or it may be preferable to begin in Phase 2. So for anybody on medications, we recommend consultation with their physician when beginning the diet.

Member question: How does this diet work for teenagers?

Agatston: Another good question. We are going through an almost unbelievable epidemic of obesity in our teenagers. We are now commonly seeing adult onset diabetes in those who are not yet adults. Although more exercise is certainly important for overweight teenagers, the adoption of the South Beach diet would completely reverse this dangerous trend.

Does anyone have any information that can be supported by a valid source, that contradicts the information I have provided? I can understand those that might have given me a hard time, not having the courage or personal integrity to admit they might have been wrong, in the way they decided to deal with me.

By the way, I can play the bump game to keep my posts on the front page as good as you can play them to keep them off, but I won't because its very childish behavior. Good luck with your games.

Believe it or not, the people who volunteer their time on this board to help total strangers actually have your best interests in mind.

I'm not really sure what you are trying to say here. If you are saying that you want to stay on Phase 1 longer because you have alot of weight to lose, you'll find no argument here. We have seen and read the same or similar transcripts from Dr. Agatston and support those statements. For those who have alot to lose (100 pounds or more), a longer Phase 1 can be beneficial.

Have you seen this from our Getting Started thread (originally obtained from the official South Beach Diet Online)?:

Member Question: How long is it safe to stay on Phase one of SBD?

Dr. Agatston: If you have a large amount of weight to lose

Thanks for rooting for me Jamie. I do appreciate your interest. I think if anyone really wants to know, I am sure they can read through all the posts, and they can see where the personal attacks actually began.

I probably could have avoided most of this, if I had sent a personal email to Cathy. That was my mistake.

Given the opportunity, I can be very helpful as well.

I do hope that anyone's personal dislike for me, is not held against Miranda because she is not involved in these issues.

I see this simply as Over blown Drama, because a few of you could not just accept me expressing my thoughts and feelings as open and honestly as I could. Instead of keeping to the Topic, discussion was steered away from that by a few members.

It really appears, that if anyone disagrees or questions part of this group, they are invited to leave the forum. Well, I apologize, because I simply refuse to stick my head in the sand and accept just anything. The information contained in this post, certainly speaks to the issue. It carries the content and information, contrary to what has been advised by several in this forum since I started the post.

Yes Karezz, I did read the getting started post. That is why I raised the questions I did, and consulted my personal Doctor before starting in Phase 1.

While I do not have over 100lbs to lose, I am close to it because I wish to lose about 80, but my real goal is to normalize my sugar. I am a type 2 Diabetic. My numbers have been coming down consistently every day that I have been on the South Beach. Daily, I am getting closer and closer to having them in the range of a normal person. Based on the time line I am seeing for those numbers to come down, I feel I might need to be on Phase One an extra week or two. I think that is well within the guidelines of Dr. Agatston's time limit. I can see where those who have never experienced Type 2 diabetes, or pre-diabetes, might not understand my logic.

My understanding has been that part of the purpose of this Diet is to reverse pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. I also realize that a persons personal body chemistry can vary from person to person. What works for one person in a 2 week time period, might not require slightly longer for the next. It is common for people who have had surgeries to experience differences in recovery time. I think there is evidence that supports this with medication as well. Unfortunately in the medical world, One Size does not fit all, or there would not be variations in treatments. Even the South Beach itself, has variations.

I also have read where Dr. Agatston has said it was ok to return to Phase One for a short time if you weight loss stalls. I am sure this will be disputed as well.

Contrary to what some may wish to believe, it was never My intent, to stir up trouble. It was only to seek the best possible information that was available to me and others like me who might be interested.
