A question about an all night event...

My family does the Relay for Life every year (through the American Cancer Society: www.cancer.org) which is a 24 hour event.  You are up pretty much all night (maybe a nap here or there) walking around a track with your team-mates (relay style...so you walk for a couple hours and then switch with the next person).  The event isn't until the end of May but I am trying to come up with a game plan now.

What are your thoughts on eating during this event.  Should I snack throughout the night.  Is that going to throw me off?  My instincts tell me to have plenty of snacks on hand and just munch when I'm hungry...night or day.  Does that sound reasonable?  This is definitely a special case...I'm never up all night anymore (unless I have insomnia).

And while we're on the subject...for my job, I start work at 2:30 PM and finish at about 9:30 PM on most nights.  I am a massage therapist so when I'm busy, I don't have a lot of down time to eat.  I actually only have about 20 minutes for dinner and that's at about 6:30 pm.  After that I have two more one hour appointment times so I definitely burn what ever I eat.   My problem in the past has been that I get really hungry by the end of my shift and end up snacking when I get home (around 10:00PM).  I know I shouldn't eat that late but I can't go to bed hungry...and suggestions for a late snack?  I only have a few minutes between appointments and those are filled with cleaning my room and picking up my next guest...and it's hard to put sheets on a table and snack at the same time.  lol.  So that's why I eat once I'm home.  Never anything huge...just snacky stuff.

Any thoughts on either subject are greatly appreciated.  This has been a thorn in my side for far too long!

Have you done Relay before?

That is so great that you are involved in the Relay. I am thinking about getting involved with it this year--my mom passed away from lung cancer in December, and I know she had gone to the Relay in her town after she was diagnosed. It's a wonderful thing.

I think everyone else already had some good suggestions. I definately think you should keep snacks on-hand for when you are hungry. Fruit, nuts, veggies,

We've done TV Shows, Movies, Candy, The 70's, Children's Stories and a few I forget.

There are several teams that keep the same name, year to year, even though our themes have changed.

Unfortunately, we've found that since Relay has "caught on", and there are now several more held in our area, we don't have the participation we use to have.

I've done the Relay 3 times with my sister & Mother...both breast cancer survivors. My sister used to be very involved in her local chapter, visiting ladies both pre and post mastectomy. It's a great way to show your support and makes for a fun and active night!!!

I haven't done the Relay since starting SB, but if I were to do it again, I would definitely take a small cooler with all kinds of lean proteins, fruits and vegetables. They always had food available at the one I participated in, but as I recall, it wasn't at all diet-friendly!!!
