Flaxseed - whole or ground?

I often sprinkle some flaxseed (about a teaspoonful) onto my salads, just to get in some extra omega-3. The other day I was talking to a friend about it, and she said she'd heard flaxseed isn't effective whole like that, and it needs to be ground to be properly absorbed by our bodies. Anybody else hear that? Do I need to start grinding up my flaxseed, and if so, does it need to be powder-fine, or would a quick buzz in the coffee grinder (rough chop) do the trick? Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response, Cathy. You're up late!

So great, all this time I've been eating whole flaxseed for no reason. *roll eyes* Time to break out the coffee grinder.

Hi Cathy,

I ground my flaxseed and leave it in a tupper in the fridge.

I buy mine already ground - not something I have the time, patience or machinery to deal with doing! I store them in the freezer and they last a long time.

Thanks, MichaelAnn. I'll definitely buy the pre-ground stuff next time, I see it in the bins all the time. I'd just bought a big bag of whole seeds a couple weeks ago though, so need to go through that first. If I'd known that they needed to be ground to be absorbable (is that a word? LOL), I never would have bought the whole seeds in the first place. Ah well, live and learn. :-)

You can slip flaxseed into just about anything for more nutrition.
