It was a great show! "The Truth About Food"

Dr. Oz talked a lot about foods and the impact they have on you and your body in so many ways. Bob Greene was on too. Everything they said backed up what South Beach is all about.

The right foods can help almost any physical or mental problem and the wrong foods can cause so many problems. Its so true that you 'are' what you eat!

I am glad that the word is getting spread more & more these days.

I called my 8 year old daughter in the room with me and had her watch it with me. If you missed it you can go to Oprah.com and get the highlights.

The thing with almonds (and nuts in general)--if I recall correctly, he said that RAW nuts are great, but roasting them turns the fat into not-so-good fat. So you just have to be careful. I for one eat nuts in all different forms, and have roasted them myself for recipes, etc. So I obviously am not strict about that!

Here's what Dr. Oz says about nuts:

There are all kinds of nuts, and some are better than others. Nuts are certainly a healthier snack than chips or candy, but they may lose up to 10% of their healthy oils when roasted. And cooking at high temperatures may even cause the formation of chemicals that promote aging. Here's a guide to nut snacking, from most healthy to least:

  • raw and freshly refrigerated

  • freshly toasted or dry roasted (in your oven)

  • roasted in their own fat and salted (in a package)

  • roasted in partially hydrogenated fat, and even worse if they're sugared.

It takes only eight weeks to change your taste buds, so we urge you to give nuts another chance -- especially since they're linked to a decreased risk of heart disease and cancer. Your best bet? Raw walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts: Walnuts rank highest in healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Check expiration dates, since nuts can go rancid quickly, and store them in the fridge to keep them fresh.

Well, my MIL also claimed she was doing South Beach for awhile - she cut out almost carbs and lived off bacon, eggs and steak. She thought she was doing South Beach rather than Atkins because she did eat one piece of fruit per day. She lost weight the first couple weeks, then as we all know, withholding the healthy grains killed her metabolism and she ended up GAINING 30lbs. So now she thinks South Beach is horrible (though she never even really did South Beach) So her "version" of what Dr. Oz things is NOT from a very reliable source LOL!

Anyhow - I had always tuned him out since I thought he conflicted so much, guess not.

We've got the DVR set up to tape Dr. Oz' Discovery Health programs, and think he's awesome.
