Solving South Beach Diet Slipups

This Week's Assignment

The South Beach Diet is a lifestyle — not a temporary weight-loss plan — so you'll be learning healthy habits that you can carry with you for a lifetime. Of course, you're bound to face challenges as you change your relationship with food, but they are doable!

Share some of the hurdles you've had to overcome. Maybe you were busy at work and felt too tired to cook at the end of the day. Maybe you stayed on your best behavior all day until after dinner, when the urge to splurge on junk food hit. Maybe the structure of the workweek helped you stay focused, but you struggled to stay on the plan during weekends. Be really specific about what tripped you up, and list the tactics you used to overcome these issues — or how you felt if you gave in to them.

Tell us about the difficulties you are still facing, and possible approaches you could take to make things work. Remember, the South Beach Diet is designed to be flexible. It's up to you to adjust it to fit your needs.

My biggest hurdle is snowballing. I've made many mistakes along the way. Everyone does, we're all human. My problem is that I don't proactively get back on the wagon after I've fallen off. At least not quickly. I let it snowball over the course of several days until I kick myself and get back on track.

For example, I normally work from home, but once or twice a week I'll commute into the office (1 hour each way). Those days are tough for me. I'm so exhausted when I get home that I don't want to cook, and if I haven't planned appropriately, I'll order a pizza or pick up something quick. And of course that makes me fall off the wagon. My problem is that I won't "fix" it right away. If I ordered a pizza, DH and I will finish it the next day for lunch (so now it's 2 bad meals instead of 1). And then instead of getting on the ball and cooking dinner that next day, I figured I'd already ruined it so we'll go out to eat, and I won't make appropriate choices (so now it's 3 bad meals instead of 1). Etc, etc. It can go on for days and days until I step on the scale and see the consequences and beat myself up over it.

The only way for me to prevent this is preparation. I try to always have easy meals in the freezer (like spaghetti squash casserole, stews, turkey chili, etc.). If my freezer is empty, I'm screwed. Also, I depend on DH as much as he does on me. If I'm having a weak moment, I count on him to be strong and pull me out of it, and vice versa. It just gets bad when we've both had bad days or weak moments together.

My snowballing habits aren't as bad as they used to be because I recognize it and prepare for it (most times). But it still does happen from time to time, and I just have to get back on the wagon as quickly as possible.
