Vegetable Garden Planted!

With the cost of veggies going up so much DH & I decided to plant our own. We both had gardens when we were growing up but this is the first one we planted. We just bought our house in December and it has an acre and a half so we finally have the room for a garden. YEAH! We have been working for over a month now getting the compost going and the garden mapped out. Yesterday we got the kids together and all went out and and planted every thing. It was fun!

I'm so excited to get the Garden in! We planted 3 different types of lettuces, spinach, 3 different types of onions, cucumbers, green beans, 3 different types of bell peppers, 8 tomatoe plants of various types, zucchini, butternut squash, chives, carrots & strawberries.  Today we will be putting in cilantro, oregano & basil. I also bought seed for broccoli which I will be planting as soon as the lettuce is used up.

I can't wait to pick my own yummy veggies to eat...not to mention the $$ we will save :-)

Who else has a garden going or is planning on planting one?

I wish they had a "jealous" emoticon---we used to have a beautiful garden at my old house but when we moved here and started one it flopped with all the shade and also the clay ground.

Very cool! I've always like the IDEA of having a garden, but every time we've tried I just don't have the time to keep up with all the work. Heck we are lucky if we manage to find time to mow the lawn every other week (we're that one house on the block whose neighbors are always mad at us because our grass is too long all the time) But with 16 units of school, the kids and their activities, dh's 16+ hour days - I haven't even managed to find a clean bra for like 3 days, let alone do any yardwork!

This is our first year to try to grow more than just tomatoes. We recently fenced in the rest of our backyard, so that we could use the extra part out there for a garden...and keep the dogs out of it!!!

This year we planted, cucumber, squash, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and regular tomatoes. My Uncle gave us 6 very nice blueberry plants to get in the ground this weekend.

Unfortunately, the cucumber and squash plants appear to be dying. Don't know what's up with that, but we'll probably plant some cucumber and squash (from seeds) this weekend and hope that it does better.

They are talking about the chance of a frost early next week down here. I'm hoping they are wrong and that it doesn't kill everything we have out there. Guess we'll just keep our fingers crossed and hope we have something survive. It's all a learning process this year anyway. If we get anything from it, I'll be very happy. If not, we try again next year!!!

I have a huge blackberry bush that came with the property...it was the reason we had japanese beetles, so it was pretty untouchable. If I have successfully eliminated the beetles, I might actually be able to eat some blackberries this year! :-)

We're sure going to try to keep the birds and other critters away from them. I've been told not to expect much fruit from the blueberries for the first 3 years. It may just come as a handful here and there.

What can you do besides netting to keep the birds away???
