With the cost of veggies going up so much DH & I decided to plant our own. We both had gardens when we were growing up but this is the first one we planted. We just bought our house in December and it has an acre and a half so we finally have the room for a garden. YEAH! We have been working for over a month now getting the compost going and the garden mapped out. Yesterday we got the kids together and all went out and and planted every thing. It was fun!
I'm so excited to get the Garden in! We planted 3 different types of lettuces, spinach, 3 different types of onions, cucumbers, green beans, 3 different types of bell peppers, 8 tomatoe plants of various types, zucchini, butternut squash, chives, carrots & strawberries. Today we will be putting in cilantro, oregano & basil. I also bought seed for broccoli which I will be planting as soon as the lettuce is used up.
I can't wait to pick my own yummy veggies to eat...not to mention the $$ we will save :-)
Who else has a garden going or is planning on planting one?

Netting is the only thing I know of.
I'll have to ask my uncle if he's ever had problems with birds. He currently has 57 blueberry plants and gets tons of blueberries each year. His plants are already full of blooms and some have tiny blueberries already.
I'll pass along any info he might have about keeping the birds away.
Good luck with your blueberries this year, Cathy. Sounds like you have a very nice garden!!!

What size are your plants, Cathy??? I had always thought that blueberry plants were all bushes. But some of these will grow to be about 12 feet tall if we don't prune them back. So if we're lucky enough for them to live, we'll be keeping them pruned back. I don't want to need a ladder to pick blueberries!!!

I know there are different varieties. I guess some grow taller than others. Some of these we got from my uncle are already about 3 feet tall. Along with plants, they gave us a huge tub of frozen blueberries. Guess we're set with blueberries for a while. I'm sure they will make some great smoothies!!!

Don't envy me. Envy my uncle with those 57 plants!!! I'll be lucky if we get a few of these plants to live out here. I really have a brown thumb when it comes to growing things. The less I mess with them, the better off they are!!!

Hi Nicol,
We live in the 'banana belt' of Canada on the Pacific, so we are planting already, much to the envy of the Easterners!
I tend to plant more flowers than veggies, but that's because we have
I started out pretty small too, two seasons ago.
