What is with that??!! ..........

Had a BIG 'food' craving today - for salt and vinegar chips - oh my gosh it was SO strong and it lasted the entire day- what is with that??!! How can a body 'want' a particular thing so much it can overtake my mind and actions?
At first I tried completely ignoring the 'need' for salt and vinegar anything, but then started to eat 'around' it which is nonsense as in the end one consumes excess calories for no good satisfaction! I asked myself what it was that I wanted the most out of the salt and vinegar chips - and it was the tartness/tanginess mixed with salt. So, I got out some balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and one piece of foccacia bread and dipped that into the vinegar/oil mixture. It totally hit the spot!! ... And with the foccacia having some coarse salt on top, I got the salty/vinegar mouth sensation that I was really craving. I know it wasn't the best 'caving into the craving', but I felt that it really served as a darn good substitute, and I got to say no to the chips twice in my day as they were sitting under my nose (at the gas station, and grocery check out stand)!
Does anyone else out there ever experience a strong craving for one particular thing, and if so, how do you manage it?
Thanks,
Christina

When I read this, my first thought was to make some coleslaw, for the vinegar part of it.
Great suggestion on the coleslaw idea!
Along the lines of the sour pickle, have you ever tried cucumbers sliced into white vinegar and chilled for several hours??? I've been meaning to do this lately. It's something that I used to eat every summer growing up.

Good Job on holding off! I do have this once in a while. And can usually find a replacement. (I need a replacement that's legal for tortilla chips so I can make my salsa!)
But more for me, the kind of craving I usually get is an "I want ... something" but I can never figure out what. Honestly, that's more trouble for me, because I keep having to say "no" instead of just finding a replacement. You can't try special things (that usually add up to too many calories/too much eating) all day long.
Michelle,
I LOVE the idea about triscuits and salsa...but I have to be really careful about how many triscuits, because I can easily get carried away, they are so yummy.
I've been doing the celery sticks with salsa to get my crunch and mexican flavour in - plus it pushes up my veggie count, which is always a good thing!

This thread made me smile. I have cravings all the time. I could at any moment sit down and eat 3 bowls of any sugar cereal. An entire pizza (which I've done on occasion - once during phase 1). Corn dogs, chicken nuggets from Burger King, WEndy's french fries dipped in a chocolate frosty, multigrain chips (the entire bag mind you) dipped in creamy asparagus and spinach dip... and cake. Or a tub - that's right the entire tub - of frosting - milk chocolate please.
So, yes, I understand. And I've never been as creative or as successful as you in squelching it! Good job!
