My doctor made me sad
| Mon, 04-14-2008 - 7:55pm |
I had a doctor's appointment today and he was not happy when I got on the scale. He told me I was at the highest he's seen. Duh, don't think I need him to tell me that. I told him I was following SB and he said "don't just follow it, do it" I have to go for a chest xray and bloodwork then back to see him. He wants to see a couple of pounds gone by then. Just what I need, pressure. I could've left there and went to buy a bag of candy but I came home and had a good dinner. I know he's right and I would feel better if I lose this weight and that's what I am trying to do but I just didn't like his attitude.
Just venting.........Molly

I agree with Cathy that unfortunately most MDs don't have much knowledge about nutrition. I've kind of had the opposite experience, but it still proves how little they know about nutrition. I went to numerous doctors for years for multiple issues (IBS, depression, insomnia, anxiety, irregular menstrual cycles) All they did was pile on the meds, more and more meds. And then those caused side effects and then I needed MORE meds to deal with the side effects. And I was just getting worse. Not ONE asked me about my diet/exercise habits or recommended I lose weight. I finally went to a new doctor - when he saw my list of issues, he said, "so tell me about your diet and exercise" The rest is history - he told me I could reverse/correct all my medical conditions without meds if I just started taking care of my body, eating better, lost some weight. Of course I didn't believe him at first, but he was totally right. He didn't recommend a specific diet by name, I was the one who found and chose South Beach, but he finally got me to understand the importance and connection of health and nutrition.
I would also look for a different doctor. While mine did recommend/encourage diet/exercise, he never made me feel bad about it.

I think that statement is key right there Molly. I hope you do go "shopping" for a new doctor who will be an encouragement to you and who will actually be helpful.
Frankly, I'd walk out of your current Dr's office and never go back. I pay too much to allow such rudeness.
I have to agree with Maggie and Becky here.
I am in awe of the amount of encouragement this board gives.
