I have mine set at 180 b/c I wanted to be in a size 12 and at 180 lbs that will do it.

How did you set your goal weight? Was it a previous low? A certain size? Or did you use a BMI calculator to give you a range?

Here's another article with the same BF% recommendations, and it looks reliable to me (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center):

Your Body Fat Percentage: What Does It Mean?

Here's a chart from a third source, which gives the same numbers as the other two.

Well - regardless, I don't think I will be hitting McD's anytime soon to up my body fat numbers! I eat, I eat a lot, I never concern myself with measuring servings or calories and have easily maintained 19-20% for over 2 years now, so I highly doubt its an "unhealthy" range for me!

I think these may be more geared toward "average" women and athletes could be different. The chart I use is from the ACE (American Council on Exercise). I guarantee most women athletes are below 20% and certainly not unhealthy. While I am not an "athlete" per say, I certainly consider myself extremely athletic and fit, so I would fit more into guidelines for athletes than the those for average women.

Thanks Maggie. That does help some. It makes sense that some of these websites would go lower for the healthy range, if they have something to gain by it.

While the body fat % is extremely important to me, I think I will have to go by how I look and feel as well. I know that I'm feeling so much better than I was 50 pounds ago, but I see a lot that still needs to happen to make me fully satisfied. And then, there's maintenance after that. So I realize it's a life-long commitment...and I'm ready for that!!!

I saw on one of these websites where you could do measurements of your neck, waist, hips and height and it calculated body fat %. I really didn't like what I saw on that calculation. It was very different from what my scales say. So that's what made me start to question my scales.

I think I will keep my initial goal weight of 160 and see where that takes me. Once I get there, I can always re-evaluate things. And I'm sure I'll always be trying to do more shaping and toning.

Thanks for your thoughts, Maggie.

By sharing the charts I found from the National Institute of Health, etc., I'm not pointing out anything to anyone in particular.
