being 40+ ?

I'm 44 now and have medically induced menopause and they aren't kidding how hard it is to lose weight later. For this amount of effort, I'm used to moving down the scale a little quicker than this. The first week I lost 5 pounds and in the following next three weeks I've lost half a pound. I'm not cheating, I've cut back on portions, I'm working out. I'm frustrated. I can't possibly be plateauing and I'm only bordering the high end of my BMI so it's not like I'm slowing down the weight loss because I'm nearing my goal. Any ideas?

A healthy rate of weight loss is 0.5-2 pounds a week. As you said, menopausal women definitely do have a harder time losing weight.

As long as you aren't stalled, I would say keep on doing what you're doing.

However, you don't say exactly what you are doing in terms of exercise. High intensity interval cardio and strength training both contribute to raising the metabolism, resulting in greater calorie burn.

I'm 45, and while I haven't gone through menopause, I'm losing weight very slowly.

I am 45 also, and have some health issues that make weight loss very, very slow -- I have PCOS & endometriosis, as well as being hypo-thyroid.

Hi,

I'm 47 and can definitely sympathize.

Hi Susan,

I definitely relate to the struggle.

I'm striving to do something everyday. I either do 40 min. of cardio on the machines, take a pilates or yoga class or go for a 60 min. power walk (on San Francisco stairs and hills). On an off day this saturday, I took a leisurely 20 min. walk, but otherwise, I worked out in some way everyday. I used to lift weights, but after two neck injuries and a lumptectomy, I keep rehurting myself.
I understand that losing 2- .5 pounds a week is considered safe and healthy. I'm complaining about having lost half a pound only over the course of three weeks. My husband kind of helped me feel better about it because I'm losing or maintaining, eating the foods I like to eat. I have to cut back on portions, ugh.

Thanks, Joy. I should ask my friend's husband about this. He's a personal trainer.

Sheesh. I didn't want to know that! This is depressing indeed. :-)) Thanks.

Hey, Maggie. I guess I wasn't clear. I lost half a pound, total over three weeks, not 1.5 pounds in three weeks. It's got to be the portions.

If I'm reading this correctly, then you've lost 5½ pounds in 4 weeks, right?
