SBD vs. WW

Hello-

Once again I am looking for the magic pill only to find out what I already know--there is none! LOL

I know weight watchers like the back of my hand, but am trying to decide to follow it or SBD.  I am looking for a little imput from people who have followed both.  Do you think that SBD is really easier and healthier than WW?  Have you noticed quicker or longer lasting results?  Do you think it's easy to maintain once you get down to your desired weight?  It seems that I hear more doctors recommending SBD than WW and am wondering about feedback from people who are actually "on the beach,."  TIA so much for your advice!

Kinda funny you should post this - I just started SB today. I too know WW like the back of my hand, i just don't look at my hand enough to do well! I have been trying to do WW for several months now on and off on my own. I have yet to have a day that i don't go over my daily points, and yet to have a week where i don't go over the flex pts half way through.

We have a lot of member here who have done both, and we even have some who combine the two. I'm sure you will get a lot better advice from them - but I thought I'd chime in with my thoughts...

My dad did WW on and off my whole life. I never did it myself - but I "grew up" with it, so to speak. 3 years ago when I knew I needed a change in lifestyle and need to get healthy/lose weight, I seriously considered it. But with further study, there was just too much about it that I knew would not be good for MY personality.

First, I don't like being hungry. I want to be able eat as much as want. On South Beach there are many things that are not limited (veggies and protein). Plus looking at a typical daily menu - 4.5 cups veggies, 3 servings protein, 2-3 servings dairy, 3 servings grains, 3 servings fruit, sweet treats, nuts, etc. - I knew there was NO WAY I would be hungry. I remember my dad moaning at dinner because he could barely eat anything by then since he used up all his points. So he would be starving and uncomfortable all evening, then I would hear him get up at 11pm and hit the ice cream because he just couldn't take it anymore. I could see myself falling into that same trap. If I feel deprived or limited - I binge. So South Beach's emphasis on QUALITY of food, rather than strict emphasis on QUANITY was a better fit for me.

I'm very glad I chose this plan, I feel that getting of the high glycemic/sugary foods and the science behind South Beach (controlling hunger, reducing insulin resistance, etc.) has been a huge benefit to me healthwise, which I may not have had with WW even if I did lose weight. I was pre-diabetic, suffered from depression, IBS and major hormone issues. All this was corrected by South Beach and my doctor credits that to getting off sugar and highly processed "white" carbs.

Also, as I said, my dad was on and off. Its been 30 years, and he has never stuck with WW more than 1year a time. He's never maintained more than 1 year. It was too difficult to keep counting all the time, it never was a "lifestyle" because of that - it wasn't just "how he eats", it always was a "diet plan". I didn't want that. I knew that in order to maintain any weight loss I achieved, I needed to keep doing it for life. South Beach just seemed livable to me. And it has been. I started January 2005, lost 70lbs in 11 months and have maintained since then. Maintenance has been a breeze, I have not fallen "off" plan at all in 3.5 years (of course I have occasional, planned "treats" - but I have never had enough that I consider my self out of control, off track, or saw a gain on the scale).

I've successfully lost weight with WWs and have put it back on again a couple of times. This last time, I could never get myself to count points after lunch. I hate the measuring, itemizing, etc. I am having a hard time losing on SB, but I put that down to my medical situation (blocking estrogen), not the program. I know SB followers who have lost and regained. I've heard that the minute you stop, you gain it all back. Isn't that the truth about any diet? This is by far the easier program to follow and it's more restaurant friendly, too.
