Babies and Splenda..????

My 10 month old is now enjoying chunky food. I decided to buy her some precut pears and peaches. When looking for the lite versions or the ones in light syrup, I found that most now are sweetend with Splenda. I love Splenda for myself, my 13 year old and my husband. I don't however know if Splenda sweetend items are ok for my baby.

What do you all think?

It's really a personal choice.

It's probably a good idea to call your pediatrician and follow his or her beliefs on Splenda.

Well - I do let my kids have splenda, but they are 7 and 10. I don't know how I feel about it for a 10 month old.

But beyond the splenda issue - this is a GREAT opportunity to get your child started on liking foods without ANY kind of sweetener. They are very adaptable at that age and won't know the difference. Plus it will set them up for a lifetime of not feeling like they need everything sweet. There is no reason you have to buy sweetened peaches and pears at all, whether its sugar or splenda. At that age I only fed my kids unsweetened fruit. You can buy things like frozen peaches and then thaw them and cut them into small bite size pieces. The frozen/thawed ones tend to have the slightly "mushy" texture that canned does, but without the sugar.

I also used this product A LOT when my kids were that age:

so that I could feed them fresh fruits and veggies.

Maybe I should have worded my post a little differently.

I don't want to fee my child sweetend fruits. My point was that I was hard pressed to find any canned fruits that were not either packed in syrup or either packed in light syrup with splenda. I would rather feed her pears and peaches that are precut and in their own juices.

My questions was specific in asking about use of Splenda with babies. It is said to be spun sugar however it does have some form of a chemical in it. I just didn't want to feed my baby with anything that is too chemically processed and unnatural.

My daughter is 4 and I still don't give her anything with Splenda. Her pediatrician said to stay away from all of the artificially made substitutes. I'm lucky because she loves fresh fruits and veggies and doesn't really care for sweets like cookies and ice cream.

I buy organic foods as often as possible, especially in the summer! Why go with canned when peaches are in season? Babies don't need artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup.

I had to 'force' my child to try a chocolate chip cookie when he was seven. I think it's great that your DD is into her veg and fruits, so important! I see some of my high school students walking around with bags of precut and washed veg instead of chips. Starting them out young liking the right kinds of food is a good thing to give our kids.
