To everyone out there who lives in the South and/or travels for business and can stay on SBD.
I am spending the week in Memphis for some training and it has been a friggin food fest. My diet has consisted of BBQ, white bread, white bagels, white biscuits, cole slaw, beans, steak fries, texas toast, candy, ice cream, beer, and did I mention BBQ?
I haven't been on business travel for years so I told myself to do WHATEVER I wanted but man, between the eating, my monthly visitor, and the humidity, I can barely see my ankles. I tried to run on tuesday AM and almost died of heat exhaustion even at 6 AM. Tonight I did get to the gym, only to undo it all with room service. I need to get back to my little California bubble of wheat grass shots and yoga.

So everyone one of you who travels for buisness or lives in the south, my hat is off to you if you can follow SBD. I have a new found admiration.
Now to determine if tomorrow ribs will be "wet" or "dry rub"......

Trust me - after you see it day and day out for awhile - its starts to look REALLY nasty!
When we first moved to Texas I couldn't believe all the food here, there were a few things here that that were just sooooo good - basically the fattier steaks and the burgers (some people love the BBQ here, but I don't). And they have so much better "junk" food - fried everything, tons of awesome wing places, things like jumbo, etc.
I never really went overboard, but my one weakness was a couple REALLY good burger places. Like nothing I had ever had before, seriously. We'd go every 2-3 weeks or so, so not excessive or anything, but still.
But after about 3-4 times, I'd had enough and gotten over it. Now we still go to one place because they have an awesome blackened chicken salad w/jalepeno ranch dressing - and every time I see them serve a burger I literally get ill. So the newness/novelty of it wears off quickly when its in your face all the time, trust me.
Its like when I was in high school, I used to work at Marini's candy store on the Boardwalk. The first few weeks I was nibbling all the time, getting some candy on my break, brining home bags of salt water taffy or candy apples. By the end of the summer, after being there like 40hrs a week, even the smell of it all made me ill. I still can't even eat the salt water taffy and its been 14 years since I worked there!
If anything, its made me even more aware of how horribly most people eat and more resolved to never be one of them. Like you said, CA was kind of a bubble, and while there were still plenty of people who eat badly there, it still was an over all healthy atmosphere. It was like people there KNEW they were eating unhealthy when they did it, didn't really "want" to, but did it anyways. I also always got compliments there if I made a healthy choice and other people were like, "yeah, that's how I should be eating too." Here its like they are completely oblivious to it, don't apologize for it, and just don't care if they die at 50 as long as they get their brisket and burgers. I get lots of "are you nuts, why would you order a salad? Just get a burger like the rest of us", then eyerolls and mumbles about everyone from CA is insane!

I live in Tennessee now and have lived in many cities in the South.

I agree that the south is not the easiest place to eat healthy. We generally stay away from the BBQ places. The BBQ is great in the south, but it is not in the least bit healthy!!! Even eating at the local restaurant can be tricky around here. Most of our cafeteria style places load up the veggies with pork fat, etc and most of the meats are battered and fried.
Do the best you can, Lisa!!! I'm sure you'll be more than ready to go back home and get back to your normal routine!!!

That's great you can find stuff and people are accommodating! I haven't had the same luck. We went to a very upscale seafood restaurant here and EVERYTHING was fried. Not one piece of grilled seafood on the menu. It was a $50+ per entree place, so I asked if I could get grilled shrimp instead of fried and the waiter said, "uh, I don't think they know how to do that." Um, I think a chef in that type of restaurant should be able to grill something! I had to get just a plain salad w/nothing on it (lettuce, tomato and dressing).
Generally here the only items that are SBD friend are VERY bland, boring and flavorless. Steamed broccoli and plain (unseasoned), very overcooked and dry grilled chicken. The attitude that prevails here is "We will offer a token healthy menu item, but since all healthy food is nasty, don't expect it to taste good. If you want GOOD food, we have to fry it or cover it with bacon." A few places are better, but its only a few and we get sick of those very few places and their very limited choices. In CA there were so many places that believed healthy food could be full of flavor and exciting, I just don't see that attitude in the menus here.

LOL! This had been a big issue for me, I still use it in the "wrong" context for TX, probably always will. In CA if we "grilled" chicken or shrimp on a outdoor grill, we would say we "BBQ'd it". Here, "BBQ" is BRISKET and only brisket - cooked for like 10 hrs and slathered in sugary sauce. Here they say grill or "cook out" if you are just grilling something on the BBQ (or I guess I should say grill, not BBQ!) Its all too confusing for me LOL!
