Going through caffeine withdrawal!!

I drink Diet Dr Pepper or Coke Zero every day. I've done SB for 9 weeks now, and I figure I really need to stop cheating by drinking all this caffeine! I have a headache and have already taken ibuprofen. Wish me luck that I'll survive the next few days of withdrawal and wont cheat!

Really? Everything I've read says to drink de-caf coffee and sugar free caffeine free soda. How many 12 oz sodas are okay a day or week?

The guidelines say to limit caffeinated drinks to 2 servings per day.

Given that I'm still very new at this and full of questions myself, so by all means please take the CL's advice over mine.

First of all...don't go cold turkey! I don't even like the feeling when my morning coffee is to "late" and I start to get a headache that just won't go away so I can't even begin to imagine what it's like not having any caffeine at all.

Second of all...you can have caffeine on SB. Some people have cravings/increased appetite caused by caffeine so they say to limit it to 2 servings (which I THINK are 8 ounces each, but I'm not sure where I got that number....) a day.

Third of all...some people's appetites are SUPPRESSED by caffeine. I'm one of those people (and I'm on the far end of the suppressed side), I am NEVER hungry between breakfast and lunch and the latte I have every morning is the reason. Also, if I drink a diet soda after/during dinner I don't get the late night munchies.

And finally, I think I know where you are seeing that caffeine is not allowed. I believe that in the original plan caffeine was not allowed - an "older" member can answer this for sure, but I think I remember reading that allowing caffeine was one of the changes.

Past Races:
-Boston Run to Remember Half Marathon, 5/29/11 (2:35:11, no training!)
-Corporate Run, 3.5 miles 6/2/11 (36:38, 4 days after running the half!)
-BAA 10k, 6/26/11 (1:04:52, wanted to be under an hour...)
-Tavern to Tavern

Caffeine affects different people different ways. It can stimulate the pancreas to produce insulin, therefore causing a rapid drop in blood sugar, which then causes "cravings" (feelings of hunger even though you should be full). In other people it actually acts as an appetite suppressant, its a key ingredient in many diet pills. Some people it really has no affect either way (that's me - doesn't stimulate or suppress for me or my dh)

So the recommended limit is 2 drinks per day - I don't think you need to be too fussy with the issue of serving size, because all caffeinated beverages contain different amounts of caffeine. For example, an 8oz cup of coffee has more caffeine than a 12oz diet coke. I'd call one can of soda a serving, one average size coffee a serving, etc.

For what its worth, obviously some beverages are "healthier" than others. I personally do try to limit my intake of caffeinated beverages just so that I make sure I am drinking plenty of water. I find if I let myself have too many sodas then I fall short on water. But if I really want more than 2, its not a big deal either, I don't stress about it and just try and be diligent about other fluids.
