SBD and the Combination Diet?

How does SBD compare with the combination diet? The combination diet is one in which you separate the carbs from the proteins - so that if you have pasta it is only with veggies, and if you have meat it is only with veggies. Never the two together.  I've never tried this before but it sounds a little like SBD.

South Beach is actually the opposite. South Beach encourages the use of "carb competitors." The idea of South Beach is to keep blood sugar levels even by eating low glycemic foods and slowing the digestion of carbs so they do not rapidly release high levels of sugar into the blood. If blood sugar rapidly spikes, then your body produces high levels of insulin. This signals cells to take in lots of glucose from the blood very quickly, then blood sugar drops drastically. This drastic drops causes hunger, the cycle repeats.

When you eat a low GI meal, blood sugar rises gently, moderate levels of insulin are produced, cells slowly take in sugar from the blood, and blood sugar levels lower gradually.

By eating carbs WITH things like fat, fiber, acid and protein, you slow down the release of the sugar into the blood, therefore keeping blood sugar more level, therefore reducing the blood sugar spike/crash that causes hunger.

So eating carbs alone is actually discouraged on South Beach.

Hi Maria,

Welcome!

South Beach has nothing to do with eating foods in combination.

There's nothing that says you have to use artificial sweeteners.

Starbucks has a Honey Latte - not that it is SBD legal obviously - but apparently they seem to think that honey/coffee work together, maybe you could use the agave to make a SBD version!

I've looked in all my regular local stores and still haven't found it yet. Will have to try Whole Foods next time I am there.
