Starbucks & Smoothies?

Starbucks has smoothies! I had one yesterday without finding out if it was actually legal or not (I checked the ingredients on-line at work - but ivillage is blocked) and it looked ok to me. But perhaps I was wrong?

Banana Chocolate Blend

Freshly prepared with a whole banana, bittersweet cocoa, 2% milk and our own proprietary whey protein & fiber powder and ice.

The Orange Mango Banana has (Naked) fruit juice in it so I totally skipped that, but I do admit to having the chocolate banana with skim milk and an expresso shot.

Personally, I think it sounds pretty high in calories.

There's also 28 grams of sugar in this and protein powder isn't recommended on South Beach.

If you MUST have a smoothie while out, this is the closest to legal I have ever seen from a big chain. Its not "legal" sure, but its pretty close since its not using fruit juice.

The way I see the calories add up - this is a 16oz drink, so it probably has 1 1/2 - 2 cups milk. Even if that was skim, that would be 160 calories from the milk. Since its 2% I'd guess about 200 from the milk, 50 from the banana, then about 20 from the protein powder.

Keep in mind that even though they SAY protein powder is illegal, they use whey protein as for the SBD Tide Me Over drinks.

The sugar as well seems like a reasonable amount from 2 cups milk, plus a banana.

To me this would be perfect if it was made with skim milk. With the 2% it would still be an occasional thing - but the best smoothie you will find out there.

I did have it yesterday with skim milk and I found out this morning that the whey/fiber mixture is added and not a "part" of anything so it could be left out.

I was going to limit myself to drinking them only when dinning in (who we have to use for dinner at work) forgets the salad, and I need something in my stomach other than a Kashi bar to hold me off until I get home. Which only seems to happen when we order Cheesecake Factory, and nothing else even resembles legal food.

Yea, I always get skinny lattes, but it's nice to have something different out there.

You can get it with skim milk, but I don't know why they don't have that option on-line. And I found out today that the powder they use is something they just add in - my favorite Barista told me that he makes them for himself without the powder.

Just wanted to add that getting a skinny iced latte blended is pretty good, just ask that they don't add anything to it before they blend it. Sometimes the baristas dont' 'get' what I am asking for, so I just ask them to make the iced latte, and dump it in the blender. I much prefer the blended texture to the regular iced drinks.

Also, my friend from Cal just came out to visit and brought out coffee extract from the "coffee bean and tea leaf"...it is so so so good in smoothies, has no sugar, and can be mailed right to ya! There are also a NSA chocolate and a vanilla blended mix, which would make is super duper good, but not sure of the legal status of it...maybe someone can investigate?!

Just some thoughts! The coffee extract is very good, not bitter, and you only use 3 ozs per 16 ounce drink you make. I need a better blender than the one I have, but they are good, and much cheaper than going to sbux! I just fill a 16 oz cup with ice, add the extract, and fill with skim or 1% milk, then blend. Sometimes I add a little ff half and half for good measure..:)

DYK that the Starbucks around here WILL NOT blend an iced latte? It infuriates me!
