Question and Reflection

Good Evening,

Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. I didn't go to the gym today but did mow lawn (with a rider), for about an hour and then later this afternoon stacked wood that my husband was splitting after we lost two huge trees in a storm a couple weeks ago. I have a question about water retention and a reflection of how my first week is going on SB. This is my first time doing it.

What do you do about water retention?  Its really hot and humid in Virginia right now. I have been drinking tons of water but my hands are still really swollen and the scale went up 2.8 pounds this morning.  I know thats water weight, not weight I gained from eating badly because I am following the guidelines to a T.  I worked out at the gym for 2 hours yesterday and figure that is part of the reason for the water weight gain, so I am not too concerned about the scale.  But before SB I would have eaten watermelon to help my body release that water but am not allowed to have that.

Thoughts?

I must say even though this first week has been VERY restrictive, I am enjoying being back on track. I feel better and am excited about getting through the next week so I can go on to Phase 2.  It really hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be.  I think I did great today considering it was the first weekend on SB.  I was a bit worried but it was fine. My body is thanking me for getting rid of all the junk I have been eating. I can feel the difference already.  I think I am going to really enjoy this new way of eating. I look forward to it becoming a permanent change in my life.

Just wanted to ask a question and share my thoughts tonight.

I don't really have much advice - other than trying to drink plenty of water, in certain circumstances I think water retention is inevitable.

I'm in Houston, so its also very hot and VERY humid. Generally I got to the gym for 1.5hrs, then straight out to the pool with the kids and spend 4+ hrs in the 95-100 degree heat/humidity. I suck down as much water as I can, 120oz most days. But all summer long I am generally about 1-2lbs heavier than I am in the winter, and I KNOW its water retention because my ring is very tight all summer also.

I've kind of resigned myself to it.

Hi Erin,

I congratulate you for staying on track and not getting discouraged by the water weight retention.

My favorite way to cook asparagus is to roast it...just line a pan with foil, put the asparagus on it, drizzle olive oil over it (I also use kosher salt), and roast it at 425 for about 20 - 30 minutes.

Thanks, Joy,

I thought I had to cut part of the stock off. I bought some sea salt the other day (first time for that as well), but it was the coarse kind instead of the fine kind.

Erin,

Maybe instead of getting the fine sea salt you could look for a grinder for it.

I agree with Joy that the best way to cook asparagus is to roast it in the oven.

Kosher salt is the best salt for cooking.

Thanks, ladies you are a wealth of information, just like I knew you would be.

I agree with getting a grinder for your sea salt. This is what we use - then I can control how fine it is. You can leave it bigger for things like roasting veggies or grind it super fine for baking. I switched to using exclusively sea salt about 2 years after using Kosher for years. Will never go back. I love the flavor of the sea salt, much "fresher" and zippier than Kosher. I also buy various kinds (from different regions of the world) they all have slightly different flavors and it is fun to experiment with.
