DaVinci Syrups

I'm back on phase one again, because I slipped up a little last week while on vacation. Fortunately, I was visiting my sister (who first introduced me to SBD), so most of the meals we ate were SB friendly.  But then we stopped at the brewery..  Anyway... I'm trying this time to push myself to have more dairy.  I was wondering if anyone knows what the shelf life of DaVinci syrups is - there are no dates on the labels.  I think the ones in my pantry are about a year old :o

Anyone know?

Thanks, Laurie

I really don't know - I've often kind of wondered, I have some that are 3 yrs old. I don't use them very often now, and they have sat there for awhile. I'd guess its VERY long, but I don't know - I've been leery of using some of my older ones even though they seem fine.

But I really wanted to point out - phase 1 is NOT meant to go back to everytime you have one slip. In fact, its really not meant to ever go back to unless you have been totally off program for a long time. One trip to a brewery - or even a full week of trips to a brewery, does NOT constitute going back to phase 1. Constantly going back does a few things: #1 - the yo-yo diet effect and slows your metabolism, #2 - can backfire and feel so restrictive that you binge.

In 3.5 years I have never gone back to phase 1. Does that mean I have been "perfect" - heck no. In fact a couple weeks ago in Jamaica I had my fair share of pina coladas for a week, but I'm just right back to phase 3 now that I am home.

My favorite way of looking at it - if you were climbing a mountain and fell back a few feet, would you go all the way back to the bottom and start over? Of course not, you would just continue from where you were. That is how South Beach works, if you slip up, you just continue from where you were, you do NOT start over again!

Found this on the Davinci website:

What is the shelf life of your syrups, and sauces?
For maximum freshness and consumer satisfaction, we recommend the following shelf life for our products.

* Classic or Sugar Free Syrups – 2 year shelf life (open or unopened)
* All Natural Syrups – 18 month shelf life, 1 week opened (more if refrigerated)
* Tea Concentrates – 2 year shelf life (open or unopened)
* 1/2 Gallon Sauce – 1 year unopened, and 2 weeks opened (more if refrigerated)
* 1/2 Gallon Sugar Free Sauces – 6 month shelf life unopened, and 1 week opened (more if refrigerated)

Hope that helps!

Be very careful with the word "craving". I don't know WHY Dr. A picked this particular word - I think it does NOT fit what he is talking about. To many of us, craving = desire. If we see a commercial for a food or hear someone talk about it and we start WANTING the TASTE of it - we say we are "craving" it. But that is NOT what Dr. A means with phase 1. His definition of a craving is this: you eat a big meal, high in refined carbs. Calorie-wise, it should be enough to keep you full 3-4 hours, but because it was high GI, it triggers a high infusion of insulin, then a drastic drop in blood sugar, and then HUNGER less than 3 hrs after your big meal. THAT is what he calls a "craving".

So if you really feel that your blood sugar/insulin is back to doing highs and crashes and it is causing feelings of hunger within 3hrs of eating a meal - then I guess you could go back to phase 1. But if you just are WANTING certain foods for the taste, smell, memory, comfort, etc. Phase 1 does didddley for that. That is all about choices, finding substitutions, etc. I'm a big believer that you need to find healthy subs for the stuff you love.

If you love bread - have bread. Find a good, legal, whole grain bread and have it everyday as one of your grain servings. I think you will find that if you give your self permission to have the healthy versions of things you love - you won't "crave" them anymore. I used to a bread-aholic. And I am serious. My grandpa worked at a bakery and made the best bread you've ever had. My dad drove a truck for another bakery. When I was in high school, I worked in a gourmet grocery store and some days ALL I had for lunch was a french baguette. Yep - the whole thing - ugh.

I now buy a great whole grain french bread from the farmers market - all whole grains, freshly milled organic flours. I make sandwiches on it most days. You don't have to change who you are or what you love - just find the right VERSION and portions of it. Carbs are not bad. Bread is not bad. Its the TYPE and QUANTITY that is the issue.

Oh my goodness -- I can't believe the post about craving above, cause I just posted that question in the DYK's!

I'm trying to determine if I am having "cravings" or if I just "want".
