Espresso machines???

DH wants an espresso machine for Christmas, but doesn't want me to spend lots of $$$ on it.

So, with up to $100 to spend on it, does anyone have any suggestions??? Seems silly to spend all this money at Starbucks if we could make our own skinny lattes at home.

So many options!!! I'll have to look at this, Patri. I think the simpler, the better!!!

I'm going to look for one of these, Cathy. Gee, I never knew coffee making could be so complicated!!! Milk frothers, steamers, etc.

I'm going to ask a dumb question. I thought the steamer did the frothing??? I guess I need to do more reading on this subject.

Great information, Becca!!! Now I know I need to do more research before deciding what to get DH for Christmas. I really like my regular coffee maker. It makes good coffee and looks good in the kitchen. I don't have room for alot of extra appliances around here. My coffee pot is something that I have a place for. I guess whatever I get should either replace the coffee maker I have, or be small enough to fit in the cabinet. It's the downside of having an open kitchen/living area. Not alot of counter/cabinet space.

Well, I can't say that I'm surprised. But you would think that since some of these machines cost so much, that they would do a decent job of both.

I knew there would be problems finding a nice machine in my price range.

We had this debate numerous times. We finally bought a pretty nice machine, it does a decent job (was about $179 on sale from $200 something) I get Starbucks about 4x a week, plus the kids get it with me too (even my 7yr old loves her decaf skinny cinnamon dolce lattes) So I was spending about $35-$40 a week.

Well my nice shiny machine (don't even know the brand, its packed away now) was used ONCE, sat on the counter collecting dust for months, and I finally put it away destined for a garage sale.

I just don't think about making it at home. I never drank Starbucks at home anyways, I like coffee while I am out and about running errands, on my way to school, on the way home from the gym - basically in the car is my "coffee time". I'd always forget to make it before leaving (rushing out the door with the kids), then be driving by Starbuck's - the drive-thru was just sitting right there, so I'd pull in. After spending the money on the machine, I still ended up at Starbucks 4x a week because its just so convenient, I drive by one EVERYWHERE I go, numerous times a day.

The only exception is lately I have been brewing one regular cup of Blue Mountain coffee every morning w/breakfast since I got hooked on it while in Jamaica. But that hasn't replaced my 4x a week Starbucks.

Anyhow - just make sure you will actually USE it, no matter how much you spend. I spent the money on the machine and STILL spend it on Starbucks. I would have been better off buying a $200 Starbucks gift card!

I make a latte every single morning and flavor it with sugar-free something (usually Cinnamon Dolce from Starbucks, or hazelnut or Almond Roca from Torani).

I have to agree, when we had an espresso machine, even if we could get the leaking problem under control, we still didn't use it that much b/c it was a pain to clean.

Ya know, I usually have to drink decaf too (I get literally sick, jittery, etc. from a regular latte at Starbucks) and as far as I know you can't get Blue Mountain in decaf (not 100% sure, but I've tried to find it online and can't, saw none in the duty free shops at the airport in Jamaica and the people at the resort looked at me like I had 3 heads when I asked for decaf on our first morning there!)

But I've been having it anyways because it is just SO friggin' good! Nothing compares to it that I have ever tasted! I'm going to be so sad when I run out of the beans we bought there, I've found some places to order online, but it would be a huge splurge!
