Breastfeeding and SB diet

Hi - I'm new here and was wondering if you guys can help me. I have been nursing my DD for 6.5 months now, and I have 15 more lbs to lose to get to my pre-preg weight. Although I have been losing the baby weight slowly, my body holds onto fat like a magnet while I'm nursing....I think it may be because I know I don't eat as many calories as I should be...I have 3 kids and finding time to eat healthy foods is a challenge. Anyway, I understand that nursing mothers should not start with Phase 1 of the diet, but go right to Phase 2. Have any of you ladies tried SB while nursing and how did it work for you?

TIA

Kimberly

Hi Kimberly,

Welcome, and congratulations on the birth of your daughter!

The link that Joy gave you is a good place to start. I'm currently nursing and on a modified P2, but I'm not really doing it strictly by the book. I did lose about 20 lbs last summer on the SBD before I got pregnant, so I kinda know what works for me and what doesn't at this point and have been loosely going with that.

Just keep in mind that you need to have all your grain and fruit servings on top of everything else while nursing, you need those calories. Don't omit or limit those like you would in early P2.

In general, what I've found to help me be successful on the SBD is 1. meal planning, and 2. watching the types of food I eat (i.e., whole grains, lean proteins, fiber, eliminate/minimize sugars). Many of us also keep journals (see the iJournal section below) to keep track of what we eat and for accountability.

Good luck, and feel free to ask any specific questions along the way.
