Search feature?
| Sun, 09-21-2008 - 7:43pm |
Okay - I am at my wits end with this. Its just ridiculous. Is everyone having problems with it??
I have been posting here for almost 4 years, for 3.5 of those years I had NO trouble using the search feature. I couldn't almost always find what I was looking for with it. I relied on it a lot when I was a cl to pull up the right info for people. So its not like I don't know how to use it.
Now it just doesn't work anymore. I can search for something like "chicken" and it will say "No Matches". Just now I searched for "cheese" (looking for a recipe that I remembere that contains cottage cheese) Yep, it said "No Matches". For cheese. Now come on, there are 100's (if not 1000's) of posts that have "cheese" in them.
What is up with that?

Cathy,
Since it seems they don't fully understand the problem, maybe you could provide the link to this thread to the tech board. Also you might suggest that they come over here and try an actual search. For example, if they input the word shrimp into the regular search and the advanced search, they'll find NO MATCHES....and we know this is not the case.
Thank you!
Hi Karen,
Yes, they've been here and found that it works sometimes.
First - something does not function properly if it is "intermittent". My dh works in the technology industry and trust me - as far as technical support goes, intermittent functioning NEVER acceptable to a client! He can't leave a client's system working "sometimes", its not acceptable, so I'm sure why the tech department at iVillage is happy with it working "sometimes". Doesn't seem very professional to me.
Second - since when does it only go back 200 posts? There is a drop down list that lets you chose how far to go back (I always chose "Beginning of Time") Why would this drop down choice be there if it wasn't possible to go back more than 200 posts? It always used to be able to go back YEARS.
(FYI - Cathy I hope you know this isn't directed at *you* - I'm just hoping the iVillage powers-that-be (or in this case, lack to be) will see it and understand that this is an essential feature for the use and FUTURE of our board.)

I think there may be some confusion about the 200 posts part.
If a time frame is specified in the advanced search, it searches that timeframe.
However, it only lists 200 posts in the results -- when you can get results to list.
Hi everyone,
Cathy, thank you for bringing this to the attention of tech.
I've also been in touch with the staff and understand that they're looking into this.
I can't get the advanced search feature to work reliably at all. The regular search feature produces more results for me these days. And even with that one, it seems to be intermittent.
And as an owner of a software company, I can only say that our customers would never let us get by with a much-needed software feature that was this temperamental. I hope the tech team will understand just how much we need this feature and work to find a solution.
Lately, I've done regular searches for 'chicken pesto', which returned no matches. But when I shortened the search to just 'pesto', it returned several matches. Chicken pesto is still not returning a match, even tho I posted a recipe just yesterday for Karen that has both chicken and pesto in it.
The bottom line for me is that the regular search seems to work better than the advanced search. And the 200 message limit definitely bothers me. The search should be returning tons of matches for entries like 'chicken'. Not just the first 200 that it finds.
I can understand how this search feature (the way it currently works), is sufficient for most other boards. But it's awfully frustrating to be diligently looking for something (mainly recipes), and not be able to find what you need.
I hope that the tech team will keep looking at this. I'll be glad to provide more example searches if they need to see more.
