Has anyone ever done a spinning class? There is one tonight at my local Y that I am thinking about taking, but I've heard it's pretty brutal. I'm not the most advanced exerciser, so I'm not sure if I'm ready for this yet.

What have been your experiences?

I went to my first spinning class last Spring - LOVE IT!

I had been exercising regularly (5x a week - pretty heavy workouts) for 3.5 years, but never did spin. I usually do weights and running, so I was looking for something different. I don't usually like classes at all - I can't stand aerobics or anything like that. I'm not a "group" fitness kind of girl, so I was hesitant. But my dh really wanted to try it, so we went together.

I was hooked in the first 10 minutes! You can go at your own pace - you control your speed/resistance, so if you need to back off and recover for a bit, you can - no one will even know. The opposite is true too - if you really want to push yourself, you can modify the intensity higher. There are usually a wide variety of fitness levels in the class. My favorite type of cardio is one that includes intervals, and every spin class I have been to so far does some type of intervals (meaning its not a steady pace the whole workout - sometimes you climb, sometimes you sprint, sometimes you are just riding on a "flat road", etc.)

Have the instructor help you adjust the bike. We don't bother with special shoes and such either and its never been a problem. Your butt will be sore - not just muscle sore, but mine felt a bit "bruised" (well, it wasn't so much my "butt" - but between my legs, if you know what I mean - poor dh had to stay away from that area for a couple days!) But I got used to it by the 3rd class or so.

I didn't get to go, I got tied up at work (stupid financial crisis). But since it got such rave reviews, I am going to go for sure this coming week.
