WEDNESDAY: DID YOU CATCH THE SHOW?
The Biggest Loser Recap: The Week 2 Curse
If you've watched other seasons of The Biggest Loser, you know that Week 2 is never pretty. After losing big during Week 1, the contestants' bodies go into panic mode, and dropping pounds gets a LOT harder. That's why the average weight loss among all the players in the show's history is a measly 2 percent of their body weight. Did my team better that average this year? Well, not exactly...
Bidding War: You know I'm not a fan of temptations that could cripple my players at the weigh-in, so when you hear about this one you'll understand why I FLIPPED...Alison called all the players into a room where each family was given a paddle and told it was auction time. Only instead of bidding on an item, they were bidding to lose a certain percentage of their body weight. Now, mind you, Alison was VERY clear that the odds were against the players in Week 2. Yet still, a couple of teams got into a bidding war, and Coleen and Jerry ended up on top, with the audacious (read: insane) bid that they would lose 2.4 percent of their body weight — at least 14 pounds. If they succeeded, they would win $10,000. If they failed, they would automatically fall below the yellow line. I flat out told Coleen she'd lost her mind — IT WAS WEEK 2 for crying out loud!! You can bet I punished her and Jerry in the gym for taking that gamble with their time on the Ranch. They had to learn that their actions have consequences...
"Sprint and Slide": Remember the Slip 'N Slide from when you were a kid? Well, imagine that game's evil twin and you've got an idea of what this week's challenge was like. Alison led the contestants to a hill, where each family was assigned to a water slide. Taking turns, each player had to slide down the hill and then make it back up before the time ran out for that round. For the first few rounds, they had two minutes, but after a few rounds Alison turned up the heat by dropping the time to a minute and a half. Teams that didn't beat the clock were eliminated, and the rounds continued — all the way up to 18 — until there was only one family standing. That hardcore team was husband-and-wife duo Ed and Heda, who won the coveted prize of a phone call home, plus the ability to grant phone time to one other team. They chose Amy and Phil so the pair could talk to the three young sons they missed so much.
Top Biggest Loser Chef? In an encore to his appearance last season, celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito showed up on the Ranch to school the players on healthy cooking. Having developed seven recipes that each cost less than $7 to make, he assigned a different recipe to each team's self-professed worst cook. He took the fledgling chefs to the grocery store and showed them how to choose the freshest ingredients, then he whisked them back to the kitchen to prepare their meals, which the other teammates then sampled. Without knowing who had cooked what, the second group of players had to rate each dish on a scale of one to ten. The winning meal was the turkey meatball and chickpea soup prepared by Amy of the Purple team, so she and her mother, Shellay, walked away with a sweet prize: a year of free groceries!
The Dreaded Weigh-in: We didn't expect this weigh-in to be a picnic, and it wasn't. Many of the teams pulled totally respectable numbers, considering that it was Week 2. My Grey Team, Tom and LT, didn't fare so well — Tom Sr. managed to drop 3 pounds, but Little Tom gained 3 to keep their weight loss at nil. They fell below the yellow line with Coleen and Jerry, whose little gamble didn't pay off: Although they lost a very decent 11 pounds, it wasn't enough to beat their bid of 2.4 percent of their body weight. (Had they not gone loony tunes and taken that temptation, they would have been in third place. See? CONSEQUENCES.) At the elimination, the other teams voted off the big boys, so Coleen and Jerry got a very lucky reprieve. And the Toms are doing great on their own at home — you can bet they're going to give the other kicked-off contestants a run for their money at the finale!
Next Week: The families are going to get a taste of that grand old family pastime — the road trip. Tune in next Tuesday to see them hit the highway...and find out what awaits them at their destination, the Grand Canyon...
