We have a lot of new South Beach Dieters on the board. For those of you with SBD experience, what advice or words of wisdom can you share with our newbies??
Honestly? Its kind of "tough love" - but it was the smack in the head I needed...
Stop the excuses. Its not genetics, its not your parents, its not because you are busy, its not because you can't afford the gym, its not because you are a working mom/stay at home mom, its not because your husband eats junk, its not because you have kids who are picky eaters or are involved in too many activities, its not because _____________________________.
I made ALL of those excuses over and over and over again. I finally had to own up to it that those who DO lose weight and succeed by sticking with things are not "special" - they don't have it any "easier". They are just more committed and don't make excuses. Former cl Maggie made me realize that in my first trip to this board, and that was when it clicked. She was a normal, every day person, a parent, had a career, a life with stress and ups and downs....but she STILL did it. She still lost weight. If she could, why couldn't I? From that moment on, when I made that realization, really, the whole thing, all 70lbs, was pretty much a great experience and a piece of cake (sugar-free, low-fat, whole grain cake of course!)
I started South Beach as a New Year's resolution in 2005. I'm now celebrating my 4th anniversary. I've kept up my healthy way of life through many, many things - illnesses, financial stress (our house in and out of foreclosure), dh getting fired (he's the only breadwinner), my mother dying, selling our home and moving from CA to TX, going back to college full-time after being a stay-at-mom for 10 years. And there are many other's here who do the same.
Let it become "who you are", not just a diet plan.
Its not all about the end result, because there IS NO END.

MichaelAnn,
I have to say (again) that you do the absolutely BEST JOB at expressing what weight loss is all about.
First of all, total commitment was important for me
