Hello, this is my second try on SBD. I did great the first time, I started just before Thanksgiving in 2007. I lost nearly 20lb's on phase1 and never even bothered with phase2 because I was very close to my ideal weight. I kept most of the weight off for a year by just watching my carbs. I lost my job and got bored quickly sitting at home and I guess before I knew it the weight slowly kept coming back. So, I started back on phase 1 and I am having a heck of a time. The first time I tried SBD the weight just fell off, but this time it seems so hard. It's been 5 days since I am back on p1 and I haven't lost anything :-( I know I have to stick with it, I haven't really been exercising either ( lack of motivation I guess)
So my question is this, does it have anything to do with trying a second time or should I just be patient?
By the way, I think this msgboard is great! :-)
Thanks
Heike

Welcome back on board!
I think part of the problem is the fact that you lost weight the "unhealthy" way the first time, probably doing some damage to your metabolism. South Beach is not about staying on phase 1 for more than 14 days - that is not good for you. Its also not about "watching carbs" - you need to eat plenty of carbs, just the right ones.
This is the same affect that many, many people find with diets like Atkins (which is basically closer to what you did, not South Beach).
I'd highly suggest moving to phase 2 now, and being patient. This is reason we insist people do not stay on phase 1 more than 14 days, you'll have to undo that damage and it can take awhile. You need to shake up your metabolism, and you need to eat a very balanced diet (which means including the whole grain, healthy carbs of phase 2) to get your metabolism back on track and burning calories. In addition to a more balanced diet, exercise will help ramp up that metabolism as well.

Hi, thanks for your reply!
I did not stay on phase 1 longer than the recommended time and I did whatever the book said to do. I ate good carbs ( after the recommended 2 weeks)
I guess I misunderstood - you said,
"I lost nearly 20lb's on phase1 and never even bothered with phase 2"
So you lost 20lbs in two weeks? I guess since the amount was so high, I assumed you stayed on phase 1 longer than 2 weeks. Also, you said you never "bothered with phase 2", so that really isn't going strictly "by the book."
