DH starting -- words of advice??

So my DH has decided to start South Beach and seems to be on board -- reading the book, putting things on the grocery list, etc. Yesterday HE made a big batch of lentil soup. Awesome.

I don't want to nag but I *think* I can be helpful to him if he'll let me. His biggest thing will be cutting back on beer -- he brews his own and got a kegerator from me for his 40th birthday (does that make me an enabler, LOL??!!)

Anyhoo, would love to hear any sage words of wisdom on how to do SB with a hubby...

Anyone??

Remember that he needs more calories than you, so his portions should be bigger and he might need to snack more during the day.

Cathy, can you elaborate on how much more calories our hubbies might need? I've been telling DH for quite some time that he probably isn't eating enough. He's been in/around the same weight for the last 5 or 6 months now, even tho he's continued to eat good and exercise. He's got another 20 pounds to go to get to where he needs to be, so I don't think he's in that area of dealing with the last 10 pounds or so...yet.

He does currently eat more than I do, at least at dinner time. But he usually chooses just to eat seconds of vegetables. Which is a good thing, but I wonder if he's not taking in enough calories and maybe he should add more protein?

Mags, DH & I have pretty much gone our separate ways as far as exercise is concerned. We sometimes do the treadmill & stationary bike together, but for the most part, that is what I do, while DH takes karate 3 times a week.

Wish I had more advice to give. DH has been on board with this way of eating for 2 years now (anniversary was just a few days ago on 1/9). I have no clue how long I could have persevered if he had not gone along with this WOE from the very beginning. It has served us well. I've now lost over 70 pounds and DH has lost well over 50 pounds. We now consider ourselves 'SB lifetimers' !!!

Good luck to both of you!

Rebeka,

There are many things to take into consideration when determining how many calories we each need to maintain our weight.

I don't have any advice, but my DH eats *half* of what I do (despite being twice my size) and I can't get him to eat more. But then he wants endless snacks in the evening.

So I just serve him bigger portions and it's ok even if he doesn't go back for seconds.

Thanks Cathy. That's helpful. We just had a discussion about how many more calories (about 500 or so), that he needs than I do per day. He's already getting his minimums on most days so I think he needs to add a little more in the way of lean proteins. Sometimes he isn't getting any protein with his breakfasts.

Thanks for your thoughts, Patty. I think I might just start giving DH bigger dinner portions too. That's usually the only meal we eat together and I do usually serve our plates. DH is usually pretty good about not snacking too much. He's usually incredibly disciplined about what he eats.
