Meal Planners -- do you have any tips?

Hello all of you expert meal planners!    I haven't been very good with meal planning for a week at a time like most of you.  Due to that, I tend to fall in a habit to the same few foods we like, and have them over-n-over.

Anyone have any "expert" tips on how you do your planning?   I have a lot of recipes copied to start trying.   I'm big on cooking large portions of freezer friendly options so we can have for lunch during the week.

Do you start with a spreadsheet, listing the recipes, items needed and merge into a grocery list, etc?   Just handwrite a list?

Just looking for some easy what works/didn't work from those who are successful with this!

Thanks.

If you already have a list of recipes that you would like to try that's a great start.

Well, that's easy enough.

I'd love to know what you come up with for the week.

This is what I do to avoid food ruts:

After I write the weekly meal plan, I archive them in a notebook, that way I can look back and see what I've made in the past that I haven't made in awhile.

Set a goal to make 1 new recipe a week. 1 or maybe 2 new dishes a week is good; 7 new recipes=overkill.
