I had NEVER exercised before starting South Beach in 2005.
I began exercising the same day I started South Beach and have continued regularly for 4 years now.
I generally workout 4 or 5 days per week - NEVER less than 3 unless I am really ill.
I don't necessarily have a "routine" as I am a big believer in the benefits of variety in an exercise program, so I try not to get into the habit of just doing the same thing every time.
But basically, my #1 focus is strength training. I do this in a variety of ways - machines, free weights, yoga/pilates, exercises that use body weight as resistance. I usually start my workout with 40 minutes of weights - I generally do heavy weights, low reps. Then I usually do 20 minutes cardio, could be running or elliptical. I do the stair machine about once a week (the one with the revolving steps - GREAT lower body + cardio), I also usually do one spinning class a week too.
Working out to me is just something I do - its not something I do IF I can, its something I HAVE to do. Its in the same category as paying the bills, cleaning the toilet, doing my homework, etc. Doesn't matter if I have time, I have to. Doesn't matter if I don't like to, I have to. I go to a great gym with an awesome childcare, great hours, lots of variety and classes, and cheap - $20/month for everything, so I've set myself up so that I really can't make ANY excuses not to go.
I started four years ago at 38% body fat and am down to 17.5% now.
Did you exercise regularly before you started the southbeach lifestyle? I exercised for a year without seeing any results before starting SBD.
If not, at what point in did you start? See above.
What's your routine? Monday - speedwork (running, ~5k) Tuesday - full body strength Wednesday - easy run (5-8k) Thursday - cardio crosstrain on the elliptical (30-50 minutes) Friday - full body strength Saturday - long run (15-20k, will be increasing in the near future for marathon training) Sunday - rest
How often do you exercise? 6 days a week. NO EXCUSES. If I am sick I will work out on Sunday and take that sick day as my rest day for the week.
Did you exercise regularly before you started the southbeach lifestyle? Yes, I started exercising after my 2nd child was born 18 years ago as a way to get back in shape.
I think i'm ready to start working out! The only think that's been holding me back is that in the past workouts have left me STARVING and I don't want an insatiable appitite to drive me to "cheating" on the bad carbs.

Yes, I started exercising after my 2nd child was born 18 years ago as a way to get back in shape.
I started working out when I was 21 because I just felt good doing it.
"I hit my goal weight on December 31st, but the working out is an ongoing thing no matter what weight I'm at. :o)"
Lindsy, I missed this...congratulations girl!!! I knew all that running would get you to your goal weight!!!

Thanks Rebekah!
Honestly, I struggled with exercise when I was on Phase 1.
Hi,
I was one of those people who just got too weak and headachey in phase 1 to exercise.
