I'm glad you enjoyed the class, but keep this in mind:
At some point you will want to do at least some of your strength training out of the group fitness setting. Take a look at the people in the class, and take another look at how their bodies have changed in 6 months. Not much progress, right?
At the gym, the fittest people are found in the free weight area lifting heavier weights than can be found in a group fitness studio.
I realize that you are new to this board, and I have changed my sig, but I am a certified personal trainer and former group fitness instructor, as well as 9 year veteran gym goer and a really observant person, so I'm not just talking out my butt :)
Take a look at my running partner (lady in the white top, upper right hand corner pic of my sig). She does TONS of cardio and barely touches a weight. She's not toned at all.
Lifting heavy on a regular basis is really important to building workable muscle and looking hot!

Until I started Curves, I had never worked out and didn't even really care to walk.
I have exercised regularly for the past 4 years.

This is all the equipment I have at home and I can get practically unlimited workout options.
12 kg kettlebell.
A pullup bar.
A variety of resistance bands.
Here's some info on kettlebell training (I'm biased about this article because they quote me extensively in it)

If you want to bodyweight train, I suggest a TRX:

I wouldn't recommend regular dumbbells, you need too large a variety in order to challenge your muscle groups correctly.
Anyways, all you need are 3 exercises to hit all your muscle groups:
- a squatting motion (squat, deadlift, lunge, step up)
- a pulling motion (row, lat pull, pullup)
- a pushing motion (shoulder press, pushup)
Start with 2 sets of 12 and work up to 3-5 sets.
I don't believe in targeted ab work if you learn to hold your abs in correctly during strength training.
