What's your restaurant eating strategy?
| Fri, 01-23-2009 - 8:10am |
Since we have so many new people here, it might be helpful to share some of your strategies for when you are eating out in a restaurant. How do you decide what to order? If you're craving something illegal (e.g. a basket of fries), how do you get past that desire? Any tips you can share would be great!

Some things that I do:
- Preview the restaurant's menu online so that I can have a plan before going in.
- Over time, I have come to enjoy dinner salads, so I will frequently choose that as an option (but I've also learned that just because it's a salad doesn't mean that it's a healthy one; I still have to look closely at what it includes).
- Sometimes I will order an appetizer and a side salad as my entire dinner, as my appetite has decreased.
- We were recently at a restaurant known for great onion rings.
"We were recently at a restaurant known for great onion rings. I do love onion rings, but I looked around the restaurant, saw people eating onion rings, and realized that they were all quite overweight. I quickly lost my desire for those."
OMG! I totally do this ALL the time. Its amazing the correlation you see when looking at who is eating what.
I also always try to preview a menu/nutritional information online.
My overall strategy depends on the situation. If its a normal dinner, then I am much more careful. If its a planned "treat" (which we do about every 3-4 weeks), then my strategy is different.

I have found that I have much less trouble in restaurants than I initially thought I would.
Cathy,
How do you ask for the food?
