What's your restaurant eating strategy?

Since we have so many new people here, it might be helpful to share some of your strategies for when you are eating out in a restaurant.  How do you decide what to order?  If you're craving something illegal (e.g. a basket of fries), how do you get past that desire?  Any tips you can share would be great!

My usual plan is to make sure we order a protien appetizer to share( chicken satay,shrimp) so while others are devouring nacho's, mozz sticks, i have something to nibble on, dinner is usually grilled fish, chicken, and instead of a carb, ill ask for extra vegetables on the side. If I eat a salad, ill ask for dressing on the side, skip wontons, croutons etc.
For dessert, may have a latte,or a bite of dessert. I always keep fruit in my purse, so if i stll crave dessert, i just wait till the car!
