Uncle Sam's: An acquired taste?

I had Uncle Sam's today, with skim milk and strawberries. YUCK!!! This is the first time since I started SB that I truly found a meal distasteful.

Will it grow on me or should I just chuck the whole box?

Is there another, better-tasting cereal that has the same nutritional qualities as Uncle Sam?

Did you try putting a packet of splenda in it?

I saw that at the market this past weekend.

I got a kick out of your post - I thought Uncle Sam's was gross! I had to add splenda to make it palatable, and I never sweeten cereal. I think it's the flax seed that makes it taste so bad.

I recommend Kashi Go Lean, it's healthy and high in fiber (I wound up giving my Uncle Sam's to one of trainers in they gym who likes it - but even he adds fruit & honey)

I actually make my own cereal- I was doing this pre-South Beach, and some parts of it aren't a perfect fit, but I think with a few alterations, it could be a good SBD breakfast. (I've been enjoying my eggs and quiche too much to go back to it, but I'm sure I'll be tired of those at some point.)

I got the recipe from "The Naked Chef Takes Off" by Jamie Oliver, who I love. It sounds a little weird, but trust me, it's yummy.

Place in a plastic airtight container and mix:

8 handfuls oats

2 handfuls bran

2 handfuls chopped nuts of your choice (almonds, walnuts, etc)

assorted dried fruit of your choice (raisins, apricots, etc)

To prepare:

The night before, pour a bowlful of cereal and add milk to cover. At this time you can also add shredded apple if you like. Cover and place in fridge.

To eat:

In the morning add more milk (it will have absorbed, but made the cereal nice and soft), fresh fruit as desired (i like berries), and honey. Jamie says you can also have it with yogurt, but I don't like yogurt, so I've never tried it that way.

Enjoy!

I'm thinking I need to go find some oats and bran when I finish P1.

Here are a couple of ideas for disguising your Uncle Sam:

Make trail mix with it: add legal nuts, some chocolate chips

Add it to yogurt, along with some vanilla, cinnamon, a packet of Equal or Splenda, and some blueberries. Makes a great breakfast or snack.

Hope that helps!
