Does it matter if you cook rolled oats in the microwave or on the stove? It takes less time in the microwave (obviously) but does it matter?

Also, have you noticed that Uncle Sam's has instant oatmeal now? I bought some but haven't tried it...do you think it's ok? Let me know if you want the product info...

TIA!

Hi Melissa,

Here's the response regarding any "instant" oatmeal:

Instant oatmeal has a higher glycemic index compared to the slow cooking type. The reason is that the particle size of the grain has been decreased with processing. This makes it easier for water and digestive enzymes to penetrate. This is why it has a higher glycemic index. The slower cooking oatmeal, including the steel cut, have not been processed. It takes increased cooking and more work for digestive enzymes to penetrate. In other words, it takes lots more work to digest it. It will stay in the stomach longer, thus slowing digestion and rise in blood sugar levels.

I will post the specific question about Uncle Sams Instant on the official website and report back when I get a response.

I also cook my oatmeal in the microwave and I agree with Kristin.

The verdict is in:

Hi Cathy,
This is not a recommended cereal because it is an instant cereal. The best choice is an old fashioned oats, or steel cut oats.
