New Kashi cereal

I just found a new Kashi cereal called "Seven in the Morning" that tastes just like Grape Nuts (which I love). It has 7 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugar, 7 grams of protein, but it has 47 total grams of carbs. Now I know we are not supposed to count the amount of carbs, but 47 seems like an awful lot. Here is a list of ingredients:

Unbleached whole wheat flour, stone ground whole: oats, hard red winter wheat, rye, long grain brown rice, triticale, buckwheat, barley, and sesame seeds, malted barley, salt, yeast, mixed tocopherols (vitamin E)

Does this sound okay?

Thanks,
Laura

Hi Laura,

This cereal had a very long discussion attached to it a few months ago.

Thanks for the quick reply. I read the previous discussion on the subject. This is definitely the most confusing diet, especially when the nutritionists contradict themselves. I was really hoping for a break from the "Good Friends" and the few other cereals on the approved list.

Hi Laura,

The many wheat terms that food manufacturers use (sometimes to be deliberately misleading) is the hardest part to decipher, I think.

According to post #11338.9, unbleached whole wheat is okay, I think. I am so confused now. I thought "enriched" was the "bad" word, not "unbleached". I might have to throw out a whole lot more than just my cereal if we can't have unbleached whole wheat. Here is that excerpt from the nutritionist:

"Whole is the most important word. You can have unbleached whole wheat flour. Unbleached indicates one of the processes was not done to the flour to make it appear more white. The most important part is to make sure the flour is made from the whole grain.

I think that both Maureen and Rachel's answers appear to be confusing, at best.

Just a thought - I, too, love Grape Nuts & was bummed when I found out they weren't approved.
