I have a new favorite ingredient!

I have just fallen in love with butter extract. Butter is the one thing I really miss on this diet. I used to use it liberally and have really been missing the flavor. I know we can use the smart balance butter, but I am trying really hard to use it sparingly instead of going through a tub a week. :)

I especially like to use it in my muffin recipes. It saves me from the temptation to slather my healthy muffin with butter.

Makes me wonder what is your favorite SBD approved ingredient?

I've tried butter extract in icing receipes before, for cake decorating and didn't like the flavor at all. It tasted really artifical in my opinion. I have however used butter sprays instead of oil before. Maybe i should try it again, in another receipe. I have two bottles of it and didn't know what to do with them. My favorite sbd friendly ingredient right now is jalapenos. I put them in everything..egg whites, on top of salads, on top of meat etc.. The heat and spice of them awaken my taste buds so very little extra fat etc are needed. Suzanne

The Laughing Cow cheeses come in a lot of flavors. I can't usually find any but the plain wedges. They taste a little like a tangy, more flavorful cream cheese. Maybe a little bit like brie? I don't know, it's not really like any other cheeses I can think of. It's very spreadable, which is why it reminds me of cream cheese. But I've heard great things about the garlic one, too.

Hope you like it! I get the light version when I can find it. But I'm pretty sure even the regular version is better than other cheeses as far as fat & calories.

I had no idea they came in different flavors. I will have to keep an eye out for the garlic one. YUM!

Scully, what else do you use it in??? I've thrown in a splash into my old shortbread cookie recipes, but haven't thought to add it to my SBD foods.... I'm intrigued.

Susan - do you make your own hummus or buy it? How long does it keep in the refrigerator? I love hummus, but have never tried to make it myself (although I've copied recipes from below and plan on trying).

Just wondered what you do.

THANKS!

Hey Suzanne,

I have tried the butter extract of a confectioners sugar icing for a budt cake. I wasn't thrilled either. However, it is awesome in my phase 2 muffins. :)

French Onion flavor????? Now I am on a hunt. I have never seen it even in my travels to Philly. I might have to ask you to give me the GPS coordinates for this item. ;) LOL!

Hey Susan,

I have been adding it to any of my SBD baked good. It doesn't take much. Another one of my favorite things to use it in are the phase 2 panckes. :) I love that recipe, especially making the modified version with ricotta cheese and topping it with sauteed apples. Yum!

I have just fallen in love with Hummus. I bought a chipotle flavored one at Trader Joes. It was awesome! :)
