I started phase 1 on Sunday and then got my mom to join me on Monday. I don't have much weight to lose, only 10 pounds, but my mom has about 50 pounds to lose. We're also Bosnian and my mother, while she speaks English, doesn't really read and write too well, so I've had to convey to her all of the information on the diet and do all of the research.
My concerns are that before going on this diet my mother would eat once a day, but she would eat a lot and she would also have a lot of sweets with her coffee as well as drinking a lot of sodas. Finally, after a couple of years of stressing to her that what she is doing is terrible for her health (eating one meal a day... and all those sugar snacks) she's decided to give this south beach diet a try with me.
I need this to work so badly and to have her see some results in the first two weeks so that she will continue with the diet. I know that it's up to her and that she really has to want to lose weight, but being that she doesn't read and write English she really doesn't understand anything about American junk food other than it has contributed to her 50 pound weight gain over the last 11 years in America.
So far phase 1 is going great for me and according to her pretty good for her too. She's eating 3 meals a day, I am urging her to have snacks too... She is a little reluctant to eat as I am telling her to because she thinks that it is too much food, being that before she would only have one large meal a day.
I'm really proud of her for giving up bread and sweets, her two most favorite things. She does have a sugar free jello when the sugar cravings hit, as do I!
Thanks for reading and if you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them. Please tell me she will lose weight! I mean just cutting out her daily (she says one, but I think more) mini doughnuts at 210cal and 11g fat each should help, let alone being in Phase 1, right?
(oops I thought I was posting this in Phase 1, but now I don't see how to move it there, sorry!)

Hi karrlii, welcome!
Wow, thank you so much for your wonderful post. To answer your questions, yes I have been reading the intro posts and looking over the recipes. I've actually been reading up on the diet online and on this message board for the past couple of weeks before I decided to give it a try. This is really great, I'm amazed at the amount of information on this board and at how supportive everyone is and most of all at the success people including you are having! That's just great! I really like reading the success section :)
I agree, it is really nice having my mom as a south beach partner. I call her about 3 times a day now that we've been on the diet; I hope I don't get annoying :) Also, last night my whole family had "Phase 1" dinner, even my 82 year old grandma who is living with my parents. My fiance is a trained chef, although he doesn't cook for a living anymore, so last night he cooked dinner for us at my parents house. I purchased the "South Beach Diet Cookbook", and so he made two meals from it one was a chicken meal (I only eat fish and my mom doesn't like fish) and the other a portabella mushroom thing for me, I don't remember the actual titles, but everyone loved it even my 16 year old brother.
I will look through the recipes and if they aren't listed will post them.
Thank you so much for your support!
Welcome karrlii~ !!!!

Hi Karlii!
I just wanted to chime in and welcome you to the Beach too!
You have gotten some great advice from the other ladies. It sounds like you and you mom are very close. To help your mom start snacking in between meals (healthy snacks, of course), why don't you shop together and then get together to do some prep work. Cut up some veggies, prepare some hummus, slice some cheeses, make baggies of nuts, etc. I find that planning ahead, and ensuring that I have the right snacks on hand really makes a difference!
Best of luck to both you and your mom - I hope to see you around here!
Karen :)
Thank you for welcoming me. That's a great idea, getting together and planning out meals for the week. We'll probably have to do it next weekend because I work part time and am in school full time.
Both my mom and I are doing great, I don't even feel like I'm dieting. Today is the end of weak 1 on Phase 1 for me and tomorrow marks my mom's first week. I'm proud of both of us! We haven't cheated at all, but I'm especially proud of her for being able to serve CAKE, this weekend, to her guests and not have a single slice! If I had cake in my house, I don't think I could not cheat!
For lunch we had spinach, mushrooms and a roasted red pepper, eggs and for dessert we had a, guess... sugar free jello :)
The guests had a bosnian dish she prepared for them, soup, a fruit juice thing she makes (it's Bosnian) and an armenian cake. My heart aches for the Armenian cake!
Another great thing is that I weighed myself at the end of my week one and I've lost 5lbs, surely mostly water weight, but still 5 pounds, that's like half of what I was planning on losing! And my mother lost 7.5lbs. I'm so happy that she's seeing results, this will keep her motivated to stick with it!
I'm happy that I'm seeing results too :)

Hooray!!!
