What are your usual starches?

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering what your usual starches are that you added in P2? Is it a bread, pasta, rice, crackers, cereal, oatmeal, etc? And, how long did it take you to add in more than just one starch per day? Do you feel like you are still doing a modified P2 (P2-lite) and do you think you'll do it this way until goal?

I'm suffering from the same fear that I had when I moved to P2 - I haven't (for the most part) been able to bring myself to add more than one starch a day. But, I don't want to get stuck in a stall b/c I'm not adding more. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

not sure if this is me, or kinda everyone that deals with this.

I started Phase2 last monday, and I added in fruit Once a day and
then occasionally a starch (not every day)
but maybe every other day the first few days.
then i would have either a piece of bread, or toast, with my eggs. or a Whole Wheat Tortilla i tried.
(not like it though).

then I started Phase2 week 2 monday.

My normal starches on P2 are brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes and cooked carrots. I also love to eat bananas (not by themselves tho) and berries of all kinds. I also enjoy couscous and barley, but they aren't staples in our menu.

I actually need to stay away from crackers and bowls of cereal -- although I can have a handful in my yogurt. For some reason, I can't limit myself to a reasonable amount of these foods. I also need to limit my bread because otherwise I'll eat it all day long. LOL.

Try upping your starch to 2 a day. For example, oatmeal for breakfast and then brown rice for dinner. You'll do fine! Are you eating fruits, too?

Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

I am eating fruits - but still only one per day. I know that I can up that. Right now, I have some WW pasta, triscuits, brown rice and WW pitas in the house - I'll just have to more consciously incorporate them into my daily menus.

I've been doing P2 since last March (took a break from October-February) - I can't quite remember how many starches I was having then, but I do know that I was having pizza and such occasionally and still losing. These are the times that I wish I had kept a journal! I guess I just need to ease up on myself a bit.

Anyhow, I appreciate both of your help with this!

Try not to stress about it. There is very little you can do "wrong". Since you have been doing this for so long, you are probaby pretty well in tune with your body. If you overdo it one day, just eat less the next day. This is real life, not a test. :)

For me, the trick is to define "occassionally"! If I indulge in something like pizza once a month it's fine. If it becomes twice a week, that is another issue altogether. Haha!

You are absolutely right - I've been doing this for so long. I think the difference this time (post-break), is that I've set weight loss goals attached to time. For instance, 13-15lbs by June 30th with mini-goals along the way. Last year I didn't do this so that might be what is stressing me out - that I won't make my goals. I'm considering just scratching the timeline - might calm me down some, lol.

Really appreciate the help!

I started in P2 but I eliminated all grain servings. So I was eating my regular veggie, protien and 1 serving of fruit. I ramped up every day to one extra serving of fruit and then started adding in the additonal grain servings every day until I was up to three. Some days I have 3 servings other days only 2. So it took me about 6 days or so to get to regular grain servings. I don't know if that is how you are supposed to do it.

Usually my starch is bread. Sometimes I have pasta or rice but mostly bread. Like today I had a sandwich. I will also eat wild rice and barley.

Edited to add: I eat a LOT of tortillas. Sometimes I make them myself. I love tortillas. Pita's too but those are a little more dry.

Hi Katie!

I totally understand being nervous about adding in starches. I never did P1 this time around so I was verrrrrrry P2-lite for a long time. I did have fruit once a day from the get-go, but that's it. Then I added another fruit. There are days on end that I don't have a grain-starch (bread, tortilla, etc.), mainly because I don't miss them at all and just don't think about them too much. But I do have my fruits every single day (usually 1/2 a banana that I share with DD in the a.m. and an apple with pb OR a pear with LC cheese wedge OR strawberries/blueberries/blackberries in my yogurt... but generally limited to two servings per day). If I want WW toast or a WW English muffin, then I don't think twice about having it, but like I said, I also don't incorporate them too often because it's not something I miss or want that much anyway.

Having said that, I do seem to lose more when I DO have more starches. Don't be scared to add them if you want them. They are healthy and satisfying!

Good luck!

I've been on phase 2 for 3 months now and currently have 2 starches and 2 fruits most days (some days I have 3 starches, maybe 1x a week). I added one of each the first week, then another the second the next week and never looked back.
My usual starches are one for breakfast (either cereal, oatmeal or ww english muffin) and one with dinner (either brown rice, ww pasta, ww tortilla, ww pizza, or sweet potato depending on what we are having)
For me personally I *had* to go to at least two because I missed them so much.

This is why I dislike phase 1 - I know its necissary for some people to "detox", but I think it makes people associate less carbs = quicker weight loss. And then they get scared to move on in phase 2. I was at first, but I've learned that the amount of nuts, cheese, beans, fats, etc. have more potential to stall me personally than an extra grain here and there.

I really appreciate everyone's help. I'm beginning to think that b/c this is my second time around I'm being more strict with myself - not sure why. I've only been adding 2 Wasa crackers or a sweet potato here and there - not daily.

I'll have to work to find a better balance especially since I've upped my workouts recently. It is nice to hear, though, that there are people adding 2-3 servings of starch AND fruit each day and still losing!

Thanks for all the advice and help!

Katie,

When I started P2 (on March 6th, after 2 weeks of P1) I decided to go the conservative route. I added I starch per day and waited until day 3 to add fruit. Then the next week I would alternate, one day a
