found a bag of Plantain chips at Trader Joe's today.  The ingredients were plantains, palm oil and salt.  That's it.  You think these were okay?  I ate them all and threw out the bag so I don't know the calories or fat grams.

Chips of any kind are usually frowned upon on South Beach.

Well I didn't really consider these chips, they are more like dehydrated fruit.

Actually most of the banana and plantain "chips" are not dehydrated like apple "chips" are, they are fried. I was so bummed when I made that discovery a few years ago! Banana chips were one of my favorite snacks, and I also thought they were just dehydrated, but nope! Fried! That's why the "palm oil" is in the ingredients. A dehydrated fruit won't have any oil in the ingredients!
I've made my own dehydrated bananas - not at all the same texture as the fried ones - kind of chewy like a dehydrated apricot or apple is, and not nearly as good!

MichaelAnn, this might sound silly, but have you thought of maybe baking that dehydrated banana chip that you made? It might make it a little criper, maybe more like the store bought ones? Just a thought.

Good idea! Certainly worth trying. I haven't done dehydrate fruit in YEARS though, I got rid of my food dehydrator about 5 yrs ago since it was sitting around collecting dust most of the time. I was thiniking of getting another one (to make stuff for the kids mostly, and maybe some sugar-free jerkey for dh and I) If I ever do I will have to try that!
