Hi there! My name is Lisa and I have been reading all these posts for a week or so but just decided to post. My husband and I started SB 11 days ago and I was very skeptical. I decided to do this with my husband b/c he really wanted to do it and needed all the support he could get but when I read the book, even though it made sense as far as the healthy eating it went against everything that I had been "taught" about losing weight as far as counting calories and fat grams. I only wanted to lose about 10 or 15 pounds so I decided to give it a try. Wow! is all I have to say. :) After 11 days I have lost 8 pounds and my husband has lost 13. We both feel so great and our clothes are falling off of us! lol I keep saying it is time for a shopping spree.. (maybe for mother's day?!!) Anyway, I think this is an amazing program and seemed to be what I was missing. I have always been pretty fit but the older I get the easier it was to gain and it was happening around my middle, which I never had to deal with before. This helped immediately so obviously I was eating more sugar/carbs than I thought I was.
I do have a question though - with summer coming up we always tend to have lots of festivals, weddings, parties to go to and we like to have a beer or two when we are out at these things. I want this diet to be for life but I also want to be able to enjoy things too so has anyone had a beer or two every once in awhile and still been ok on this diet? I am nervous about all of a sudden gaining it back in a day or something if I have a beer in a few weeks but realistically I can't see us giving up things we love for the rest of our life either. (Gosh, I sound like an alcoholic! Truly I am not! LOL!) Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this...
Anyway, good luck to everyone! I know that I am enjoying this immensely and hope to continue my success in the next phase!!!
Lisa

I hear ya on the beer! Actually my dh does more than me - he also is someone who could never give up beer for life. For me its wine (I'm Italian and had wine with dinner from about age 3 on...it was our "milk" LOL!)
My dh has low carb berr all the time and it hasn't hurt his weight loss. We really like the Rolling Rock "Green Light" low-carb (I think its 80 calories and 2 g carbs) and the Michelob Ultra isn't bad either. As far as my understanding goes the low-carb beers fall into the same category as wine:

Member Question: I know red wine is an acceptable alcohol choice in Phase 2, but what about the new low carb beer that is out?
Dr. Agatston: There are several studies that show that alcohol in moderation (one to two drinks per day) helps prevent heart disease and diabetes. These studies do not distinguish between alcoholic beverages. Low calorie beers, in moderation, can be included. Wine is theoretically a better choice than other alcoholic beverages because it does contain antioxidants and other nutrients that appear to be healthy. We also advise drinking with a meal, because alcohol does slow the stomach from emptying and therefore slows digestion and the rise and fall of blood sugar. Alcohol, particularly before a meal and on an empty stomach, appears to stimulate appetites. Beyond two drinks, alcohol is fattening and has other adverse effects.
Admin_John: Could you comment on beer and liquor as well?
Dr. Agatston: While wine has theoretical advantages over beer and other liquors because of its antioxidant properties, actual studies of heart disease prevention have not shown an increased advantage from wine as expected. Moderate consumption of alcohol of any type is acceptable. However, be careful not to include mixers that contain additional calories. A recent study has indicated that juices alone can be responsible for increased weight gain in children.
Congrats on your loss and welcome to the board!!
